2009 NFL Draft First Round Mark Sanchez Sat Behind John David Booty 5 Round
To me aspects of the NFL Draft are totally insane and so are the NFL General Managers especially when it comes to quarterbacks. The most insane thing is what I call the Rob Johnson syndrome. Rob Johnson was a 4th round quarterback from USC drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Rob Johnson’s first NFL start as quarterback for Jacksonville came about because the starter, Mark Brunell was injured and Johnson was spectacular that game as he completed 20 of 24 passes for 294 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 31 yards and one touchdown on four rushes in a 28-27 win. He was soon injured and never really played much after that game for Jacksonville. Yet on the strength of 1 Pro Football Game, the Buffalo Bills in 1998 traded a first and fourth round draft pick for Johnson and signed him to a multi million dollar contract. This for a player who was a 4th round draft pick on the basis of 1 game as a professional quarterback. Rob Johnson wound up being a mediocre at best NFL quarterback.
The latest member of the “Rob Johnson Syndrome” is quarterback Matt Cassel of the New England Patriots. Matt Cassel hardly played at all at USC and was lucky to be a 7th round draft pick. He had a lousy 2008 exhibition season and many thought he was going to be cut by New England which surprisingly kept him. Tom Brady was injured the first game of the year and New England finished with an 11-5 under Cassel who did an excellent job as a “Caretaker Quarterback” with one of the best teams in the league. On the basis of Cassel’s performance which in my opinion most back-up quarterbacks in the NFL could do if they knew the Patriots offensive’s system and played with these great players, Matt Cassel is now considered a must have quarterback by several NFL teams who are willing to give up a number 1 pick and pay Cassel multi millions. Go figure. I do and these teams are idiots.
All of which leads me to the curious case of Mark Sanchez, USC Quarterback. For two years Mark Sanchez sat behind John David Booty as USC Quarterback in a pro oriented offense. Both of these players are roughly the same height and weight and USC did incredibly well with both of them as quarterback with many of the same players. Yet John David Booty was a Fifth Round Draft Pick in the NFL selected by the Minnesota Vikings but Mark Sanchez is considered a First Round Pick. Sorry I don’t comprehend. Sanchez could not beat out John David Booty, a player of his same physical side, on a team with a pro oriented offense with the same players and he’s considered a first round pick while the player he couldn’t beat out, was a fifth round pick? Sorry this doesn’t compute. Please check out our large Online Discount Gift Store Click Here and our other Online Discount Stores below which helps support this politically incorrect blog. Thank you.
