2009 NFL Playoffs Lessons Learned for NFL Head Coaches
The problem with many NFL Head Coaches is that they are very close minded and conservative. Here are 2 important lessons they should have learned from the 2009 NFL Playoffs that’ll probably go in one ear and out the other for most NFL Head Coaches.
Lesson 1 – When You’re Playing An NFL Team with a Good Offense Always Onside Kick with 5 Minutes Left or Less
In the last minutes of the Arizona Cardinals Atlanta Falcons game, I thought Atlanta Head Coach Mike Smith with Atlanta on defense, managed the clock as well as any NFL Coach I’ve ever seen and still the Falcons lost. The reason they lost is because Atlanta did not onside kick with 5 minutes left and down by 6 points. Attempting an onside kick in that situation would be considered by most NFL Head Coaches, Fans and announcers as panicking and not a good coaching decision. Wrong! Atlanta never got the football back as Arizona and Kurt Warner did a great job getting first downs. Lesson learned, if you’re playing a team with an offense as good as the Arizona Cardinals and you are down by 6 points with 5 minutes left, go for an onside kick because you may never see the ball back.
Lesson 2 If You Can Rest Your Running Back in The Regular Season Do So
I’m sure the Coaching Staff of the Arizona Cardinals wish they could take credit for their idiotic mistake of benching their best running back Edgerrin James which turned out to be a genius move in retrospect for the wrong reasons. Quite simply by benching Edgerrin James, the Cardinals running game turned into an absolute joke. James didn’t play or barely played for most of the second half of the NFL season until the Cardinals played him from the last game of the season onwards. The end result was that James had a fresh pair of legs and has upgraded the Cardinals running game considerably which makes the passing game more effective as it opens up the play action pass. Lesson unintentionally learned, if your team has clinched a position in the NFL playoffs, rest your star running back for the playoffs as much as you can. Of course I doubt any NFL team would do this.
