Ali Farokhmanesh NBA Teams Need 12th Man Like Him

The thing that drives me crazy about the NBA and other pro sports is that most NBA teams never seem to value or consider how good or bad a college player is in the clutch. You would think that would count for something in pro sports but it just doesn’t seem to factor in. Nothing personal against San Diego Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding but what exactly is the point of having a great football kicker if they’re not great in the clutch? Which brings Northern Iowa’s Ali Farokhmanesh to mind. The 5’9″ listed as 6′ Northern Iowa basketball guard almost singlehandedly helped Northern Iowa beat two higher ranked NCAA opponents: UNLV and the University of Kansas in the first 2 rounds of the 2010 NCAA Basketball tournament on clutch shots. The latest one, Ali Farokhmanesh’s three point field goal with 30 seconds left on the time clock against Kansas was as pure clutch and fearless a basketball shot as I’ve ever seen. It’s one thing to take a shot with just a few seconds left on the basketball clock in a tight game against a tough opponent but it’s another to squeeze the trigger and take a long shot at the basket with so much time left on the shot clock at the end of a close basketball game. I think most basketball players unless you’re a Michael Jordan, a Kobe Bryant or a Larry Bird, no matter how good you are a shooter wouldn’t have the guts to take a long three point field goal attempt with that much time left on the clock at the end of the game but Ali Farokhmanesh because he has that much faith in his ability wasn’t afraid to take the shot that beat Kansas.
Unfortunately because of Ali Farokhmanesh’s height, I extremely doubt many NBA teams will be interested in Ali Farokhmanesh in the NBA draft or giving him a fair shot at making their team which is a shame. I know if I coached an NBA team, I would always have as my “12th” and last man on my bench a player who could hit and wasn’t afraid to take a three point shot at the end of a game with my team losing or tied. Chances are if the team sets up an adequate screen, the player’s height won’t factor in that final shot, just their ability to make it. Unfortunately that mentality does not seem to be part of most NBA teams way of thinking. All of which is a shame as a player with the heart and ability of Ali Farokhmanesh belongs in the NBA.
