While most of you are probably psyched and planning to see Avatar by James Cameron which will be opening this week, it is important to know ahead of time that it is being shown in four different ways at differently equipped movie theaters: RealD 3D, Digital 3D, 2D and Imax 3D. Oh before I go on, a quick plug if you don’t mind for one of our newest Online Discount Stores which helps support this politically incorrect blog: New in 3D Discount Store featuring 3D TV, 3D Video Games, 3D Electronics, 3D Software and more
From what I’ve picked up online, please correct me if I’m wrong, is IMAX 3D is bigger and has better sound. But Real 3D glasses are more comfortable and the picture has less glitches because only one projector is used while IMAX uses two. Imax 3D is filmed in a 1.78:1 format for a fuller and more immersive picture. 2D and RealD 3D are cropped for fitting into a 2.35:1 image leaving part of the top and bottom missing. When seeing the film in IMAX 3D make sure the screen in actual Giant IMAX size not just using IMAX technology. James Cameron I think said that that the 1.78.1 aspect benefits the 3D from the extra height.
Here is an explanation of what each of these Different Movie Projection Formats are so that you can make the best decision on which Avatar Movie screening you wish to see.
Avatar Imax 3D
Before you read any further please note that Giant Imax screens are about 76 X 97 feet but some movie theaters that in the past have advertised themselves as IMAX, use Imax technology but their screens are much smaller about about 28 x 58 feet. I recommend you call the movie theater in advance and ask them how many feet is their screen.
To quote Wikipedia “To create the illusion of three-dimensional depth, the IMAX 3D process uses two camera lenses to represent the left and right eyes. The two lenses are separated by an interocular distance of 64 mm (2.5″), the average distance between a human’s eyes. By recording on two separate rolls of film for the left and right eyes, and then projecting them simultaneously, viewers can be tricked into seeing a 3D image on a 2D screen. The IMAX 3D camera is cumbersome, weighing over 113 kg/250lbs. This makes it difficult to film on-location documentaries.
There are two methods to creating the 3D illusion in the theatre. The first involves polarization. During projection, the left and right eye images are polarized perpendicular to one another (or right-hand and left-hand circular polarization is used) as they are projected onto the IMAX screen. By wearing special eyeglasses with lenses polarized in their respective directions to match the projection, the left eye image can be viewed only by the left eye since the polarization of the left lens will cancel out that of the right eye projection, and the right eye image can be viewed only by the right eye since the polarization of the right lens will cancel out that of the left eye projection. Another method for 3D projection involves LCD shutter glasses. These glasses contain LCD panels which are synchronised to the projector which alternates rapidly at 96 frames per second between displaying the left and right images which are momentarily viewed by the appropriate eye by allowing that eye’s panel to become transparent while the other remains opaque. While the panels within these active-shutter 3D glasses alternate at 96 frames per second, the actual film is displayed at 24 frames per second.
Several films produced in the RealD 3D process for release in conventional theaters have also been presented in IMAX 3D, including Dreamworks’ Monsters vs Aliens, Columbia Pictures’ The Little Engine That Could and U2 3D.”
Update Follow Up from Jack, a blog reader thanks, :
“In respect to the 3d technology only, the major difference between IMAX 3d and Real 3d technology is IMAX is using right angle polarized lense. What this means is the light wave for your left eye is reflecting off the screen at 90 degrees compared to your right eye. This allows the glasses to separate the images for each eye instead of using the old Green/Red method. It works great but you will notice an issue if you don’t keep your eyes horizontal to the picture (thus changing the angle of the glasses). If you keep your head relatively straight you will never notice any issue. Real 3d has corrected this issue by projecting something called circular polarization. This allows you to view the film from any angle without the image separation failing. My guess is the IMAX technology is so expensive that the theatres don’t have the cash to convert their IMAX 3d over to IMAX Real 3d. But that’s just my opinion.
As for Avatar I have seen it twice in IMAX 3d and think it’s absolutely amazing. If you haven’t seen it please go now, wether you see it in IMAX or not you definitely want to see it in 3d. It was not over done and the 3d elements were suttle like dust floating in the light and nats in the jungle. It truly immerses you in the film without needless over the top elements flying out towards your face. Absolutely remarkable film, I really wished James Cameron had more say in the creation of the video game which turned out to be an atrocity.”
Avatar RealD 3D Cinema
RealD 3 D is the world’s most widely used technology for watching 3D movies in theatres. To quote Wikipedia, “RealD Cinema is a digital stereoscopic projection technology. It does not require two projectors, unlike older film-based stereoscopic 3D projection technology. A high-resolution, digital cinema grade, video projector is used.”
Films shown at Real D Movie Theaters include “Beowulf”, “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert”, “U2 3D”, “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, “My Bloody Valentine 3D”, “Monsters vs Aliens” and “G-Force”.
Avatar Digital 3D
To Quote, Dolby.com, “Dolby 3D Digital Cinema is an extension of Dolby Digital Cinema, a powerful, flexible, and reliable technology. Dolby 3D Digital Cinema ensures that your audiences enjoy a richer, more compelling 3D experience, with realistic color and a sharper, clearer image from every seat in the house. It’s the kind of experience that drives dramatic box office performance and produces a new level of audience excitement.
Dolby 3D Digital Cinema retains compatibility with 2D presentations, so there’s no need for a dedicated 3D auditorium. In fact, alternating between 3D and 2D presentations is easy.
Better yet, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema uses a standard white screen and a standard digital cinema projector (with a simple accessory), minimizing your investment while eliminating technical issues and compromises. And Dolby’s reusable 3D glasses are lightweight, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
For content creators, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema simplifies creating and distributing mind-blowing 3D movies, because there’s no need for additional color correction or other compensation processes in postproduction. That means distributors can master and distribute a single digital file that can be played in both 3D and 2D auditoriums.”
Avatar 2D
This is regular 2 Dimensional Movie Picture that you’d see at any regular movie theater.
I apologize if this article has perhaps confused you more. I welcome any corrections. As for myself based on my research, I plan on see Avatar in Imax 3D at an Imax theater shown on a 76 X 97 feet screen that I will verify with the movie theater by phone before I buy my ticket.
