Bike Lock Safety U-Lock Not Chain Locks Not Cable Locks

I’ve been relatively lucky that I’ve never had my bicycles, electric bikes and electric scooters stolen as I like an idiot have always used either cable locks or chain locks to lock my bike when I’ve left it outside mainly because cable and chain locks seem to be the most available bicycle locks available at bicycle stores and are pushed sales wise. Well my cable and chain locked bikes were stolen bikes waiting to happen until I bought a U-Lock last week and I’m posting this blog to tell you that you should buy a U-Lock too if your bike has any value to you. I’ve always felt misguidedly safe leaving my bike locked in front of a store but always felt uncomfortable leaving it locked in front of a movie theater for a few hours even if there were security cameras there. That all changed when I bumped into someone in front of a supermarket the other day who I assume was either an ex-bicycle thief or a bicycle thief who somehow liked me cause I showed him respect! What happened was, I was chaining up my $800 IZIP-HG 1000 Electric Hybrid Bike in front of a large Supermarket. This guy in his 20′s with a somewhat tough looking exterior was sitting on a bench about 15 feet away and he advised me that I wasn’t locking my bike up correctly and I should put it through 2 sproles not one. I said well I’m only going to be in the supermarket for under 2 minutes and he said why not take 30 seconds to do this then risk having my bike stolen. He then told me that with a cutter he could have my lock cut in less then 20 seconds and just take off with the bike. Well the first thing I did was say “you’re right, thanks and looped my lock through 2 sproles.” He must have liked the fact that I actually did what he recommended and thanked him for it and then we had an interesting friendly discussion on how to best lock your bike so it wouldn’t be stolen in which he said that the only real good locks that prevents bicycle theft is the U-Lock and that cable locks and chain locks were a bicycle thief’s dream as they are fast and easy to break off with a cutter in a few seconds. U-Locks on the other hand take a long time, at least 30 minutes, to cut through and are avoided by bike thieves. He then for some bizarre reason after I thanked him again for telling me all this- I swear I’m not making this up, asked me if I ever saw “Dumb and Dumber” which I said I did and loved and then proceeded to tell me about a scene I forgot about a friendly grandmother who steals this guys bike! I was now creeped out when I went inside and feared he was going to make off with my bike. Luckily it was still there 5 minutes later and so was he and I thanked him again for all his advice.
As soon as I got home, I researched bicycle locks online and sure enough he was right: Both cable and chain Locks are easy prey for bicycle thieves and U-Locks are avoided by bike thieves. I then spent $75 for myself and ordered the top rated U-Lock I could find, the Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-Lock ( 4-Inch x 10.25-Inch) and it fits in my bike basket and I now use it everywhere and feel totally secure especially when I leave it locked up for 2 hours in front of a movie theater. I recommend that if you don’t have a U-Lock for your bicycle or scooter you get one now and get rid of your cable or chain lock.
