Bobby Fuller 4 Story Should Be an HBO series “I Fought the Law”

HBO would rather give you “John from Cincinnati” instead of “Deadwood”. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would rather have such noted rockers as Leonard Cohen, Madonna and Miles Davis instead of Bobby Fuller. That says it all about the state of the Entertainment Industry. Here’s a surefire idea for an HBO series that would be both a ratings and critical hit but will never be done because its just too easy and would succeed: “I Fought the Law -The Bobby Fuller 4.” Please note this is an updated piece of one of my first blogs of a year and a half ago

Bobby Fuller’s story sells itself and should have been a hot movie and a book 25 years ago but to quote John Belushi, “Nooo”! It’s just too easy and the powers that be would rather give us “John from Cincinnati” and put as I said Madonna, Leonard Cohen and Miles Davis in the Rock Hall of Fame.

The Bobby Fuller 4 performed what many consider to be the greatest rock record ever, “I Fought the Law” and Bobby Fuller’s true life story sounds like it was written in Hollywood: Raised in Texas, handsome musical genius kid goes to Hollywood in the 1960′s with his brother Randy and friends to seek fame and fortune, has gorgeous women flocking all over him, hits the big time with “I Fought the Law”, has a huge following of stars and starlets in the Hollywood clubs, lives the rock star life to the fullest and then one day at 23 in 1966, is found dead in his car in front of his house beaten and bruised with gasoline all over him and his death is ruled a suicide! Like he could have driven home after committing suicide by beating himself up and pouring gasoline down his throat and body! I mean his story is “Buddy Holly” meets “JFK” meets “Friday Night Lights” and this doesn’t get turned into a movie or Cable TV Series but “John from Cincinnati” does? Just calling it “I Fought the Law” gives it instant credibility. All one needs to hear is the initial drum beat and chords of “Law” to recognize the song.

Picture the opening credits or coming attractions we see the Bobby Fuller 4 Playing “I Fought the Law” on stage with beautiful women in the audience swooning and then a montage with Bobby Fuller’s Greatest Hots like Let Her Dance, Julie, My True Love, Never to Be Forgotten in the background of Bobby as a kid in Texas, followed by a naive kid going to Hollywood, then back on the stage then offstage with his arms around some beautiful women in an open car basking in the Hollywood sun and glory with a narrator Saying at “21 Bobby Fuller had it all, looks, beautiful women, hit records and talent”. We then see his car go around the bend and see him parked, beaten up, a mess with gasoline over him, as the narrator then says, “At 23 he was dead”. The HBO series that never was would then spend the next year interspersing his life in Texas, coming over to Hollywood, making it big and speculating about his mysterious bizarre death, in the same and different episodes, kind of like “China Beach”, if I remember that TV series right. The sound track would feature all the great stuff he recorded. The soundtrack would sell the TV series and the TV series would sell the sound track.

Here is a short 12 1/2 Minute Documentary on the death of Bobby Fuller I found online:

Bobby Fuller for some bizarre reason has never had a biography written about him (A book from Australia has just been released but I heard its more of a recording history book then something dealing deeply with his life and how he really lived and died), never made the Rock Hall of Fame and is practically forgotten about but has been due for a revival for the last 25 years. He was Elvis, Dylan and John Fogerty rolled into one. Yet John from Cincinnati hits the airwaves and Leonard Cohen rocks the Hall of Fame. That sucks! Bobby Fuller Lives!
