Buying a New Car the Smart Way

Buying a car is a huge investment, perhaps your most valuable if you are not yet a homeowner. If you’ve already checked new car dealerships to get an idea of what’s out there, you know that salesmen will tell you anything you want to hear so that you will buy their brand. The smart way to car shop is to research, research, research. There are many things you will want to take into consideration if you are buying a new car; it is not about looks alone.

Many new car buyers make the mistake of buying only what is attractive to them, but there are other more important factors to consider. Among them are:

Automobile Safety

Everyone wants to feel safe in their vehicle. Safety is perhaps one of the most important things to consider, especially if you will frequently have children in your vehicle, or will be traveling often. Consult new car buying guides, which will often detail how each vehicle fared on certain safety and collision tests. Choosing a vehicle with appropriate safety features is a must, such as side and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes and sturdy bumpers.

Brand Record

It’s not hard to find out if the vehicle you are interested in is manufactured by a brand with a good history. Certain models or makers may have issues that you just don’t want to deal with. Find out if the vehicle you are interested in has a history of recalls, reported lemons, or frequent need for repairs after a short time off the car lot. You will save yourself a huge headache.

Foreign Cars versus Domestic Cars

Not always a matter of where you are putting your dollars, it might be an important deciding factor in your car buying experience. The difference is that typically it is less expensive to have a domestic vehicle repaired. Parts are not shipped from overseas and technicians do not need to travel overseas for specific training. Some foreign vehicles may have a record of needing service or repairs less often, but when they do need to go in the shop, it could break the bank.

Car Cost versus Car Value

If you think you are getting a good deal on your new vehicle, take the time to compare it to similar vehicles in its class. You may find that you can get a very similar vehicle for much less because of the pricing of options. You may also discover that it is worth it to give up an option or two in exchange for a less expensive model produced by a different brand.

Car Dealer Reputation

Last but not least consider the dealer you will be buying from. You may find a great vehicle, produced by a reputable manufacturer, but from your car buying experience to the times you need to bring it into the shop… you will be interacting with the dealer. Make sure their salesman, technicians and even finance department have a good reputation before entering a contract with them.
