Cadillac Records A Good Movie Captures the Vibe Not History

I just saw Cadillac Records and consider it a good solid movie that captures the Vibe of Chess Records and their music but if you’re expecting an accurate musical history of Chess Records you’ll be extremely disappointed. Before I go on, I wrote a Blog Post here on 10 Must Best of Albums by the Chess Artists: Muddy Water, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf, Etta James, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Koko Taylor you might be interested in Click Here

Honestly if you’re looking for a history lesson you’re better off watching a documentary on Chess Records. I thought “Cadillac Records” did a great job in condensing the story of Chess Records by having many of Chess Recording artists weave in and out of the movie without losing a step, given just an hour and forty nine minutes to work with. If you were going to include all the noted Chess Artists like Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker and others as well as Phil Chess, the co-owner of Chess Records, you would have had to do a 3 hour movie which would have been too long and dragged everything along. As it is, I thought the pace of the movie and the music captured the vibe of Chess Records. Yes things were not always in chronological order but you should have gotten a vibe about what Chess Records Music was all about. Adrian Brody in my opinion did an excellent of playing Leonard Chess who both cared for and helped his artists as well as not exactly giving them all their royalties without any apologies or remorse. I thought the actors playing the musicians did a really good job particularly Columbus Short as Little Walter who should be a whole movie in himself, Eamonn Walker as Howlin’ Wolf and Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters. While I would have like to have heard the original Chess Recordings, I thought the Music was excellent. The only thing I thought was poorly done was that the actors who played the Rolling Stones didn’t look a thing like them.

Basically if your a strict blues historian or someone who doesn’t know anything about the blues you’ll probably hate or not get into this movie but if you’re someone who either knows a little about Chess Records or is a casual fan of the Blues, you’ll enjoy this movie.
