Years ago I heard a great English Rock Group who sounded like Yes Meeting Crosby Still and Nash and I was astonished that hardly anyone seem to have heard them in the United States despite 2 superlative albums: From “Scratch” and “Voices”. Most of the tracks on the albums, recorded in 1972 and 1974 respectively, were group originals and their covers which included Argent’s “Liar” incorporating the beginning riff of Argent’s “Like Honey” and Rare Bird’s “Redman” were excellent. Capability Brown consisted of Tony Ferguson on guitar, Dave Nevin keyboards, Kenny Rowe bass, Grahame White guitar, Joe Williams percussion and Roger Willis drums. All the members did vocals. Until now, for whatever reason, the two Capability Brown albums were not available on CD.

These 2 Capability Brown CD’s are put out by a company called “Second Harvest” and you can find these CDs sold online. I’m surprised how great these CDs sound as I was expecting them being dubbed directly from the original vinyl record and they sound like they were taken from the master tapes instead as the sound is excellent pristine quality with perfect mastering. I’m not particularly impressed with each of these 2 CDs graphics as there’s no linear notes or songwriting credits and I can see why people try to download this stuff for free online as the cosmetic package isn’t anything memorable, However, I did buy these 2 CDs for the music and they were more than worth buying in spite of the absence of liner notes for the excellent audio quality of great previously unavailable rock music on CD.

As for the albums themselves, I think Capability Brown had one of the strongest vocal and instrumentation combinations I’ve ever heard and sounded too me like Crosby, Stills and Nash on vocals backed by Yes! Capability Brown unfortunately broke up in . Three of the members of Capability Brown, Roger Willis, Grahame White and Tony Ferguson, though went on to form a group called Krazy Kat in 1976 and recorded 2 albums, “China Seas” and “Troubled Air” which are both available on a 2 for 1 CD on a Swedish Label called Tone Arm which you can also find online to purchase.
