College Basketball Coaching and Recruiting Mistakes That Cost Wins

While I’m sure every college basketball coach in the United States knows 1000 things more than I do about basketball most college basketball coaches have an obvious blind spot I’ve constantly observed that costs their teams wins and gives them “Moral Victories” instead of wins. College Coaches could actually win more basketball games if they did what I’m about to point out which really isn’t rocket science but somehow 95% of College Coaches are totally oblivious to what I’m about to point out. If you know a college coach you might want to show them this Blog Post.
How Teams could win more Games instead of losing Closely for Moral Victories:
Committing Fouls at the end of the quarter
There is nothing more moronic than some idiot player committing a foul on a player in the last 5 seconds of each quarter if its in the shooting foul situation. Most of the time with 5 seconds left the player with the ball is not in a good shooting position and instead of the player taking a forced shot and missing most of the time, you’re handing a player 1 or 2 free throw points. Multiply that by 4 quarters and we’re talking up to 8 points you are handing the other team. Announcers like to make excuses for these kind of miscues by saying the defensive player was overenthusiastic. If I’m a College Coach I would simply tell each of my players that they are not to foul at all with 5 seconds left in the clock and if they do they will be suspended 4 games. That might sink in!
Recruiting Players Who Can’t Shoot Free Throws
Sorry I believe what you see is what you get. If a player can’t shoot at least 70% of his free throws in High School, don’t bother recruiting them. I can’t tell you the amount of players teams have that miss a bunch of free throws in a game which is a quiet momentum breaker and will get your team behind before you know what hit them. There are plenty of good players around who can shoot 70% of their free throws so just recruit them. Don’t recruit players who hit under 70% of their Free Throws in High School. Do not take the attitude that you’ll teach them to shoot free throws and they’ll improve. Most of the time they won’t. Sorry it isn’t hard to shoot a free throw and the ones that can’t do it in high school either don’t care or practice long enough to make them. There simply is no excuse not to hit 70% of your free throws. No ands ifs or buts.
Throws in at the end of the quarter
As shown in the Duke- Butler game, why not put your tallest player guarding throw ins at the end of each quarter?
Fouling a Player Beyond the Three Point Line
Again there is nothing more stupid then fouling a player beyond the three point line if its going to get a player 3 free throws. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen this done in College games. As I said previously, announcers like to make excuses for these kind of miscues by saying the defensive player was overenthusiastic and/or it was a freshman mistake, etc. If I’m a College Coach I would simply tell each of my players that they are not to foul beyond the three point line and if they do they will be suspended 4 games. That might sink in!
Winning by what got you there not losing close by what the opposition gave you
There is nothing I hate more and teams do this all the time and in football too, by giving yourself moral victories, when you put your team in position to win a game in the end but usually just lose by playing to what the other team gives you instead of playing to win by what got you there. More often then not, Coaches want to try to either look like Coaching Geniuses by losing or winning close, rather than just trying to take it to the other team and win by the sword or die by the sword. While the Butler Head Coach did a great overall job to get his team into the NCAA Basketball finals against Duke, why the hell didn’t he have his best player, Gordon Hayward, force the action in the first half instead of being a non-factor on the offense. I do applaud the play that let Gordon Hayward win or lose the game at the end, so don’t hate me Butler fans- I rooted for your team! For whatever reason, when a teams go to player or go to offense, doesn’t take charge in a game, the team offense winds up out of sync. In Football, the then Arizona Cardinals Offensive Coach Todd Haley in my opinion cost the Cardinals the Super Bowl by not forcing the action in the first half to what got them to the Super Bowl in the first place. Sure there is a chance that you’re team may lose big and not stay in the game by forcing the action but there is also a chance your team could Win. Supposedly and I may be wrong about this, Coach John Wooden of the great UCLA basketball teams never bothered trying to prepare his teams against the opposition, his attitude was let the other team stop UCLA. Coaches need to have the attitude of going with what got you to the dance instead of playing for Moral Victories. Usually the Super Bowl Champions and the NCAA Basketball Champions have won because they played the way that got them to the Big Game.
