College Football History: Boston College Head Coach Precedent

Every College sports team ought to say thanks to Boston College for having the balls to do to their Head Coach what none of them ever dared – Not letting a Head Coach use their school as a stepping stone for themselve at the expense of the school. The move of Boston College firing their Head Coach for interviewing for another job 2 years after accepting Boston College’s Head Coaching offer, will probably hurt Boston College in the short run but help both Boston College and all NCAA Sports teams in the future. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m all for Head Coaches and anyone else being allowed to leave their present position to advance to another position for promotion, career enhancement or personal reasons, but it should be after a reasonably agreed period of time in advance. I’m sure 2 years wasn’t what Boston College had in mind when they hired Jeff Jagodzinski to be their Head Football Coach. I also don’t know if their firing of Jagodzinski is legal if there wasn’t anything in writing forbidding him to interview for another job.
College Sports Teams are used by many Head Coaches as Stepping Stones without conscious and because of the idiotic way the NCAA is governed, the ones who really suffer are the College Athletes because they are not allowed to transfer for a year to a Division I College and they must sit out a season. There are sometimes limitations on top of that. So you get College Football Coaches recruiting a kid to play for them often promising them they’ll be coaching at the college for the kids athletic career and sometimes jumping ship before the kid even starts school. When that happens the kid has to sit out a year if he wants to play at another school.
What Colleges should do in the future is put a Clause in the Head Coaching Contract that forbids them to interview for another Sports related job until the Coach has been at the school 3 to 5 years. Anyway, I applaud Boston College for laying down the law.
