Coumadin Advice to Save Your Life and Save Money

I am not a Doctor but an individual like you who is on Coumadin, a Blood thinner. Here is my personal advice that may save your life using Coumadin and also save you money but before you listen to my advice, you should discuss this Blog with your Cardiologist. If you don’t have a Cardiologist and are on Coumadin, get one right away or you can be kissing your life goodbye. A regular Doctor in my opinion won’t help you but they could unintentionally kill you. Do not pass go, make an appointment with a Cardiologist immediately if you do not have one and are on Coumadin. If you don’t, in my opinion you’re playing Russian Roulette.
Your Doctor Can Kill You
I have a great regular Doctor but at various times he has almost caused me possible bad coumadin interactions and almost killed me by his total lack of knowledge over Coumadin which is why I say you need to have a regular Cardiologist. The good thing is that if a prescription medicine has a bad interaction with coumadin your pharmacy will usually catch it right away and prevent you from using it as long as all your prescriptions including Coumadin are in their computer’s database. The bad thing is that if your Doctor tells you to take a vitamin or herb or you chose to do it yourself and don’t ask a pharmacist, you’re screwed if it has a bad interaction. So here are some rules of thumb that could save your life:
1. Make sure your Doctor or any other Doctor or Dentist you see has all the medications you are taking in their file. Ask them for a computer print out. If something is missing, have it corrected immediately and ask for a print out of the corrected listing. Ask your Doctor or Dentist if all of these are fine with Coumadin. Same with your Cardiologist. If you are taking any herbs and/or vitamins or supplements, go over them with your cardiologist. I would also bring the list to your pharmacist. Anytime you are getting a new vitamin, supplement or prescription, it doesn’t hurt to double check if everything is OK with the pharmacist as well. Remember rather safe than sorry. In this case it could be permanently sorry! Do not take any kind of Aspirin at all other than Tynol occasionally no matter what your regular physician says.
2. When you have a Dentist appointment, contact the Doctor (if its not your Cardiologist) who is administering your Coumadin Program. This is not your regular General Doctor. I cant repeat myself more, do not get involved with your regular Doctor on anything that is Coumadin related but your Cardiologist only. Your Coumadin Administrator will be prescribing an Antibiotic for you to take before you go to the dentist and and will probably tell you to cut if not discontinue your usage of Coumadin the day before you see the Dentist and the date of your appointment.
Coumadin Versus Warfarin (Generic Coumadin)
Believe it or not there are some generic drugs that don’t quite have the same effect as the Brand drug. Though I don’t believe a Doctor or Pharmacy will agree with me, do you truly want to take a possible chance, no matter how slim, by saving a few bucks on using Warafin (Generic Coumadin) rather than the Brand Drug, Coumadin? I sure as hell don’t especially as we’re talking about your heart.
Your Cardiologist
Basically, if you don’t have any problems, your Cardiologist will likely only want to see you once a year, where he does a thorough examination as well as have several X-Rays of you taken. If you don’t have a Cardiologist or don’t see hlm once a year, you’re asking to die in my opinion. A regular Doctor is no substitute for a Cardiologist.
Saving Money On Your Coumadin Prescription
I wasted hundreds of dollars on my Mail Order Coumadin Prescription, by not having the prescription written out for 5mg individual coumadin pills for a 5 MG daily prescription. Instead the Pharmacy was sending me the same total MGs of Coumadin in 2 MG pills which cost a lot more. If you want to save money and your taking 5MGs or more daily, get all your Coumadin pills in 5MG size not 2 MGs.
In Conclusion
Basically Coumadin isn’t something that you can take a folksy, I’m fine, I don’t need to see a Cardiologist or do this or that. If you do, you’ll be dying a premature death. Just remember, rather safe than sorry.
