CSI Las Vegas: John Cleese Would Have Been a Better Choice than Laurence Fishburne to Replace Grissom
I love CSI Las Vegas and I love William Peterson as Gil Grissom. Peterson is essentially leaving the show but instead of replacing him with someone like John Cleese, Richard Belzer, Dan Ackroyd, Christopher Walken, etc., they go with Laurence Fishburne who to me is totally miscast for the part.
I think Fishburne is a decent actor but his somber type style to me is just not right for the part. Peterson was somehow able to bring subtle comedy and quirkiness to his role as well as seriousness without seeming contrived. I just can not see Fishburne doing this. I think this is another case of someone thinking “let me pick a name actor that no one expects and if he succeeds, I’m a genius. If not, well they’ll say no one could follow Peterson”. It’s like when sportswriters and sports announcers make outrageous upset predictions on games and when it happens they’ve made names for themselves and when it doesn’t, it’s quickly forgotten about. No harm,no foul.
Having said that, I thought Gary Sinise being cast for CSI: NY and Liev Schreiber doing a temporary stint on CSI: Las Vegas was genius casting and I was totally disappointed in both of their performances, in fact after watching 2 episodes of CSI: NY, I quit watching. So maybe I’m totally wrong to be anticipating Fishburne to be awful. If I’m wrong, I will totally delete this blog and replace it with one giving Fishburne his props. I actually hope I am wrong and CSI: Las Vegas succeeds with Fishburne.
