David Bowie Jean Genie Versus Honeybus Girl of Independent Means

There once was a really great English Rock Band in the 60′s called The Honeybus that I doubt many people heard of in the United States though they did have a big hit in England called “I Can’t Let Maggie Go”. One of their great recordings was “Girl of Independent Means” recorded in 1968 (You can hear all of Honeybus’s great recordings in a Double CD titled “She Flies Like a Bird, the Honeybus Anthology”.
For some reason, it never struck me till now that Honeybus’s “Girl of Independent Means” is very similar in structure to a major portion of David Bowie’s Jean Genie, one of my favorite rock tunes, which it predated by 4 years. I’m almost puzzled why this wasn’t made a big deal back then but then I’m thinking that both songs were influenced by Bo Diddley’s “I”m a Man” which could have led to a legal mess. When I found the Honeybus video below interestingly enough several people had made similar comments on You Tube. Why don’t you watch these videos, make up your mind and let me know what you think. I like David Bowie so no hate mail please!
