Breaking News: Earliest End of the World Now Spring 2009 From Large Hadron Collider

Please check this blog regularly for the latest Revised Status of the possible End of the World from the Large Hadron Collider.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) won’t happen be at full operation to possibly destroy the world now until early spring 2009, due to an electrical glitch sparked a large helium leak inside the machine’s tunnels. Specifically, during a routine test on September 19, 2008, an electrical link failed between two of the machine’s 30-ton superconducting magnets, which guide speeding particles through the track. What doesn’t seem to occur to most people is if they screwed this up, why they can’t be wrong about saying the world is in no danger because of this experiment.

While it will only take 2 months to make repairs, the collider apparently needs to be shut down in the winter to save costs. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) therefore decided not to restart the particle accelerator until next year. To fix the problem, the section has to be warmed up, repaired, and cooled back down, a process known as a thermal cycle.
