Ebay Dispute: How to Deal With Ebay Sellers over Ebay Disputes

I am both an Ebay Buyer and a Seller, and chances are you’ve probably received an item from an Ebay seller that wasn’t exactly what you were expecting based on the Ebay listing. Well even though I have excellent Ebay feedback, I have been on both sides of the coin, receiving disputes as a seller and initiating them as a buyer. This blog post will tell you what to do and what not to do to get a dispute you’ve initiated resolved amicably and in a timely manner.
Let’s start off with what you shouldn’t do. When you contact the Ebay seller initially, you should not attack him in any way which means don’t accuse him of ripping you off, don’t call him names, don’t insult him, don’t make threats, etc. As a seller, when someone does that, especially over an inexpensive item, it makes me respond in kind, which doesn’t do anyone, any good. In fact when that happens I basically am uncooperative to the Buyer and just tell him, “I don’t have to deal with this crap, Give me Bad Feedback, I don’t care” cause I don’t need to put up with it. Contrary to what most Ebay buyers think, if a seller has enough positive feedback, they’re not going to care if you give them Negative Feedback if you treat them like dirt as they’re people too and they just won’t put up with you attacking them.
What you should do is just state the facts, i.e., I received 5 comic books and they were not in the condition as described and I would like this to be resolved as follows. Its important that you state the facts and how you want the matter resolved. When this happens, I check the buyer’s Ebay feedback rating, and if its good, I take them at their word and use common sense in resolving the issue. If for example, I sell someone what I believe to be an authentic autograph and the buyer claims its a forgery, I’ll say, send it back at your cost fully insured and I will give you a full refund of what you originally paid once its received in the same condition it was sent out as. Do not expect any seller to refund you until they’ve received the item back. If the price of a disputed item is so low, I’ll just give a full refund, as disputes over a small amount of money are simply not worth my time. I’d also seriously recommend that you write the seller that if the dispute is settled amongst yourselves, you will not leave Negative Feedback or any Feedback.
If you’re not satisfied with a seller’s response, simply file a paypal complaint. My advise to you is not to get into a “pissing contest” with the seller, but just go direct to Paypal if things aren’t resolved within your initial email and just stick to the facts. The matter will get resolved by Paypal and chances are good it will be resolved in your favor. I’d advise everyone who purchases on Ebay to use Paypal. If you don’t, skip the rest of this blog as it won’t help you.
So the bottom line is, initially contact the Ebay seller with your problem by just reporting the facts and how you would like the problem resolved, possibly giving the seller several options, and do not attack, accuse or insult the seller in your email. Also tell the seller you will not leave Negative Feedback or any Feedback if you resolve it amongst yourselves. If the seller does not resolve the problem to your satisfaction, just go straight to Paypal and file your complaint, just stating the facts. Don’t continue contacting the seller. I’d advise you not to file Negative Feedback if applicable until after Paypal resolves this.
