If Time Travel was ever invented, the second thing I’d want to go back to the past and see after Lee Harvey Oswald in the Texas Book Depository being set up would be to see the late great Elmore James and the Broom Dusters live. I’d take that any day over seeing the Beatles before they became the Beatles! There tragically is no video footage of Elmore James at all which is why going back in time to see Elmore James play Shake My Moneymaker, Dust My Broom, It Hurts Me Too live just can’t be beat. Unfortunately, that will never be possible but the next best thing is: the Ace Records remastered Elmore James Blues After Hours album from the original first generation tapes!
I was shocked when I heard “Blues After Hours” remastered on the Ace UK label for the first time. The sound was so incredible, it felt like Elmore James was playing live in my living room with the best pristine audio ever for raw edgy unrelentling blues. Elmore James never sounded this good before. Ace Records did such a fantastic job remastering the original tapes of Blues After Hours, it sounds like Elmore James was recording this album in 2010 with State of the Art equipment but no sacrifice in the gritty Elmore James Sound. Elmore James vocals and Elmore James guitar are clearer then they’ve ever been without losing their impact as are the other musicians even though the album was recorded in 1955!
“Blues After Hours” which features the definitive “Dust My Blues” and “Standing at the Crossroads” also includes 8 bonus tracks and features Eddie Taylor, J.T. Brown and pianist Little Johnny Jones. If you’re a fan of the Blues, Elmore James Blues After Hours (remastered) on Ace Records is a must for your collection. I salute you, Ace Records. Long live, Elmore James!
