I love HBO Entourage series but I’m not particularly into the series musical as my musical tastes are mainly sixties and 70s rock and Blues, however the other night I heard this amazing tune that I never heard before called “Funnel of Love” at the end of the show and I was totally knocked out and in love.
I was shocked to find out that this was recorded in 1961 and I had never heard it before by Wanda Jackson, one of the first popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock and roll artist, who’s still alive, kicking and performing today. Wanda Jackson was a hot looking number in her day and even dated Elvis Presley! Amazingly “Funnel of Love” wasn’t a big hit.
“Funnel of Love” was written by Charlie McCoy and Kent Westberry. Several artists have covered “Funnel of Love” including Southern Culture on the Skids, Tav Falco Panther Burns, Mike Ness, Demented Are Go, Meat Puppets, The Fall and a Danish band called Duck and Cover whose delightful informal video is below. The video in a way shows that performers often are at their best when they are relaxed and just messing about as this video shows. While I like Duck and Cover’s recorded version of “Funnel of Love”, I find this Duck and Cover video “Funnel of Love” backstage so much better as the female lead singer is so amazing and cute. “Duck and Cover” should transfer the audio on this informal live video to disc and release this recording as a single, informal or not- hey the Beach Boys had a hit with “Barbara Ann” this way. The video is better and more effective than these million dollar videos bands spend as its genuine and conveys a mood of warmth and fun:

I feel really embarrassed that while I’ve heard of Wanda Jackson, I’ve never heard of any of her recordings till now and I’m now going to start listening to her greatest hits. I can’t believe I never heard “Funnel of Love” till now. What an amazing classic.
