Gene Chizik Auburn University Hires Sarah Palin as Coach
The decision to name Gene Chizik Head Football Coach of Auburn University is on par with John McCain’s decision to have Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate. Both decisions were clearly idiotic, choosing people of questionable talent over people with better talent and not factoring in public perception as a hiring criteria.
Gene Chizik had been the Head Football Coach of Iowa State where he had a two year record of 5-19. Before that he had been a very successful defensive coordinator for Auburn and the University of Texas and in 2004 won the Broyles Award, given to nation’s top assistant college football coach. He also had strong ties with Auburn Football boosters as well as Auburn University. He replaced Tommy Tubberville as Auburn Head Coach, who either resigned or was driven out despite having a an 85-40 lifetime record at Auburn (5-7 in 2008). One of the reasons this hiring has gotten such bad press is that on the surface Auburn University hired the worst qualified Head Coach based on Chizik’s 5-19 record over better candidates including Turner Gill, one of the few Black Head Coaches in College Football who was 8-5 this season at the University of Buffalo and had gotten Buffalo into their first Bowl game in 50 years. The harm and fallout of choosing a less successful White Head Coach over a more Successful Black Head Coach is immeasurable no matter how Auburn rationalizes it. Auburn University will now have the reputation,deserved or not, as a University prejudiced against Blacks. I can’t imagine this not alienating fans as well as hurting the recruitment of Black Football Players. That Auburn University would make this decision and ignore what this decision would do in terms of both Auburn Unviersity’s and the Auburn Football team’s reputation is beyond comprehension. Well maybe not as that’s what John McCain did naming Sarah Palin as his running mate and we all saw how that turned out to be.
