My teeth were never that bad, thank God!
The most obvious sign that a person is not successful is bad teeth which indicates to most people that you do not care about your appearance, have bad health habits and in all likelihood are poor. Believe me that creates an immediate impression on someone. However shallow this sounds, this is a shallow world. A potential date, a supervisor, a client, or an interviewer, is not going to be drawn to you seeing yellowed stained crooked teeth! It also won’t help your image if you don’t floss your teeth regularly leaving popcorn visibly in between them or meat trapped inside them smelling like the dead animals they are!
Now I’m not saying that you need to have a smile like a movie star which costs a fortune, but you need to at least have an average smile. Tough love here- having decent cosmetic teeth isn’t cheap! What I would do first is get dental insurance. You won’t save a fortune but you’ll save something especially on crowned teeth, cleanings and bridges. Unfortunately, whitening teeth isn’t covered as far as I know. You can save money by getting dental work at dental school but that’s something I wouldn’t recommend unless you can’t afford a professional dentist. I once on a whim tried it and let’s just say, I wouldn’t do it again. That’s not to say that you can’t get good treatment at a dental school but just that it’s the luck of the draw.
The first thing I would do is go to a good affordable dentist that people recommend and clearly state that you want to improve your teeth cosmetically and the budget what you have. Try to set up a plan for the next few years as its not going to happen all at once unless you just have a few problems. I would start with getting any noticeable gaps between teeth filled. Then get your teeth whitened unless the dentist says you need a few crowns and he doesn’t want to whiten your other teeth until the crowns are in to match the coloring. Getting crowns is not all that fun as you have to have temporary teeth put in the until the crown is ready. As I said, none of this is cheap, but investing in your appearance, will pay off in the long term.
The one thing that you can do for free to at least prevent your teeth from looking worse is: 1. Don’t smoke as it can cause staining, 2. Don’t get into any fights or avoid any contact sports, as fixing knocked out or broken teeth can cost you a fortune and 3. Floss after every meal and brush your teeth daily. You may not be pleased to invest your time and money getting your teeth fixed now, but as I said it will pay off for you in the future.
