Hospital Emergency Room Cost- Why You Need Health Insurance

Thank God I have Health Insurance. I know I’ve posted about how anyone who doesn’t have health insurance is an accident waiting to happen but I thought I’d provide a recent example that happened to me a few months ago. I foolishly rode my electric scooter in 100 degree plus weather without drinking much water and I suffered heat stroke for the first time in my life. I thought I was going to die and a friend who got the paramedics for me said all the color had gotten out of my face. I literally could not put together 2 sentences in a row and could not remember by family’s phone number.
When I got to the Hospital, the Doctors assured me I was dehydrated and they were going to put me on IVs for 2 hours. After the first hour, I came around and by the second hour I was my own self and I was well enough to go home. For this entire experience the Hospital, for which I was grateful for, charged over $1500. Luckily with insurance, I just had to pay $100 out of pocket.
Heres how they broke down the charges:
Outpatient Drugs $550
Supplies $80
ER Clinic/Miscellaneous $925
The bottom line is, if you have to go to the Hospital Emergency Room without insurance you’re going to be billed a pretty penny that you might not be able to afford. All it takes is just one stupid accident, so I recommend you get Health Insurance before something happens to you that you didn’t plan on.
