How to Fix a DVD Easily that doesn’t Play Right or a CD as well

The thing I hate about renting DVDs is, at least 25% of the time I get a screwed up one that some cretin has messed up and dumped on to the next renter. I’m sure that has happened to most people reading this and here are some tips to help you get it to play correctly. My tips can also be applied to CDs when they skip. Before I go on, some DVDs are so screwed up that no matter what you do, they won’t play right but before you take or send them back for a replacement, you might as a final option, see if they play right on your computer. I’ve done this a couple of times. Obviously its not as much fun as watching on a big screen TV listening in 5.1 or 7.1 Sound, but its a final alternative.

Whenever you hold a DVD, you want to hold it on its edges because the slightest fingerprint may cause it to skip. Here by priority is what I do if I get a bum DVD:

1. Put the shiny side under hot running water for 10-15 seconds and then dry it off with a towel. If it plays right great, if it doesn’t run it again under hot water and dry. If it still doesn’t play right, go to step 2.

2. Buy a Skip Dr. Automax DVD CD Repair System which costs about $34 and you can get this in Chain Stores and online. Skip Dr. Automax DVD repair system runs on batteries and it Fixes scratches that can cause discs to skip, freeze, and fail to play, is a completely automated disc repair system and Motorized, battery-operated, chemical-free operation. It includes Resurfacing fluid, Buffing cloth and a User’s guide and is very fast and easy to use and had a high success rate fixing DVDs I rented and my CDs. I was surprised how good it works. The resurfacing fluid is replaceable and inexpensive.

3. It’s Not You, it’s Me! If both of the above fail, then maybe the problem could be with your DVD player itself, specifically the laser lens which may need cleaning. You need a Lens Cleaner which is simply a disc that cleans your DVD player (or CD player or Computer drive) when you put it in and press play. I use Maxell Lens Cleaner which you can get for around $12 online and in a store and is also easy and effective to use. This may solve the problem, if the problem is your DVD player itself.

If none of the above solve the problem, see if the DVD will play on your computer if you’re willing to watch from there. If it doesn’t play right on the computer or you’re not willing to watch from it, then don’t lose sleep, you’ve done as much as you can and just return the DVD. I would recommend though that you have the Skip Dr. Automax DVD CD Repair System and the Maxell Lens Cleaner or similar products on hand as that way you have a decent chance of fixing the DVD.
