How to Send UPS Packages And Not Have Them Stolen (Probably)
If you want to know why the US economy is down the tubes, you just need to look at UPS, the United Parcel Service. Based on my experience with UPS, it apparently does not occur to them to: 1. Have packages signed for, 2. Ask for ID when having packages signed for and 3. To not leave packages outside of a door where anyone can help themselves to a free present. The worst thing is, they don’t even seem to care. Maybe this practice doesn’t exist nationwide but its been my experience with them and they don’t even deny that they do this and it doesn’t occur to them that this isn’t a sound business practice. In all fairness to them, they’ve always paid off in full on their insurance claims to me in a fairly fast time.
Getting back to the Blog title, about the only way you can be pretty much guaranteed that the package you mailed won’t be stolen as a result of UPS leaving the package in front of a door is to specify that someone has to sign for it. This won’t cost you any extra money. I still would insure anything you send UPS (though I believe they automatically insure everything under $100, you should double check on this) as a few years ago they brought a package sent for me into my building and they just asked a stranger standing in the Hallway to sign for it without asking to see ID! But the bottom line is, if you do not request a signature they pretty much won’t ask for a signature. I should add that you can specify that only the person the package is addressed to be allowed to sign for it.
My favorite UPS delivery happened 20 years ago when my then girlfriend moved in with me and had all her personal belongings sent by UPS (she lived over 100 miles away at the time). UPS left 20 or so packages in front of my buildings entrance facing the street where anyone could have taken them! At least they apologized when I called to complain.
I will say that UPS customer service and the UPS deliverymen are actually very nice and polite but I just can’t understand their business practices. Just remember to make sure you specify a signature for anything you send UPS and make sure your item is insured. Hope everything you send for Christmas arrives safely. Happy Holidays.
