Hudson River Plane Crash Video – Why I Won’t Fly!

First off congratulations to US Airways Flight 1549′s pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III for saving everyones lives with his incredible emergency water landing in the Hudson River in New York and for all the passengers who emerged safely. Here is a video of this incredible feat from different cameras. If you didn’t know this actually happened, you would have said it was Hollywood Special Effects. As I said, I am truly happy that everyone made it out alive, but it is things like this that stopped me from flying years ago. The following is from two different blogs posted here. I apologize if you think I am exploiting this crash by repeating these blogs here, if anyone had died, I would not have posted them:

I posted this August 25 from a Blog Titled: “Once An Airplane Goes Down, Two More Usually Follow”

I don’t know how many of you are aware of this or take it seriously, but it always seems like once there is a major commercial airplane crash, two more airplane crashes follow within a relatively short period. If you don’t have to fly during this period, I recommend you don’t. I personally don’t trust airplanes anyway as well as anyone involved in getting me to my destination safely. January 17, 2008 Comment: Obviously I’d trust pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III, now. but I still think he’s the exception rather than the rule.

I posted this December 2, 2008 from a Blog titled: “Fear of Flying Is A Good Thing Everyone Should Be Afraid to Fly! (Revised Repost)”

They say that you’re much more likely to die in a car crash then a plane crash. What they don’t say is, most car crashes occur instantly or in a few brief moments and when your plane goes down or is in trouble, you have time to realize that you are trapped in a helpless situation for which there is no escape. That is exactly the reason why I will no longer fly. I can accept the concept of instant/near instant death or injury, though I don’t want it to happen but I can’t accept the fact of knowing the possibility of death awaits me in a matter of minutes and there’s not a thing I can do.

Thirty Five years ago or so, I had no fear of flying and never gave it any thought one way or another until Ronald Reagan came along. What happened was that in 1981 the Air Traffic Controllers went on strike and over 11,000 Air Traffic Comptrollers were fired by Reagan and either replaced by less skilled employees doing other jobs or not replaced at all. That’s when I started getting paranoid about flying. This made absolutely no sense to me and I’m surprised the reaction of the general public seemed non-existent. To me, it was similar to having brain surgeons replaced by Family Practitioners.

The older I got, the more I realized that commercial aircraft are maintained by mechanics who if they’ve had a bad day or are depressed etc, can screw up fixing or repairing a part that may be essential to its operation and if this is not caught by someone else, may eventually cause the plane to go bye bye. I don’t like putting my life in their hands. The same goes with pilots to a certain degree. If for whatever reason, they are not operating at 100%, something could happen. Does anyone go to work at 100% all the time? We slack off, don’t pay attention, make careless mistakes, take careless short cuts, goof off, etc., but at least most of us are not in position where we can cause someones death or injury. We’re human and so are pilots. That’s the scary thing.

I have no faith in Airline Security. If you don’t pay people high wages and give them incentives to do a good diligent job, you are asking for trouble. As far as I’m concerned, we don’t pay the airport screeners and other security people enough money to do their job with the utmost care. Now I’m not saying these people don’t do their job well but all it takes is one unmotivated employee.

One thing I’ll leave you with and if it saves a life no matter how people will dismiss me for saying this fine- Commercial Airplane crashes seem to happen in groups of three. No, I don’t have any proof of this but I notice that when one plane goes down, two usually follow within the next week or so. My theory is that Crash One makes other pilots subconsciously more nervous and affects their decisions and performance. The bottom line is, if I have to travel now I will do so by bus, train, boat or car as I’m willing to sacrifice time and money to have better peace of mind. I obviously won’t be an astronaut.

Yes, I’m not living life to the fullest and not going to places I’d like to visit because of my fear of flying, but for my peace of mind, its worth it.
