Identity Theft Prevention Private Domain Name Registration

While there is really no foolproof way to prevent identity theft, there are millions of ways that help facilitate identity theft especially Domain Name Registration for your website or blog. I don’t think many people with their own websites and blogs are aware that when they register their domain name, unless they do it privately, their personal information including name, home address, email address, phone number and more, is available for anyone to find on the Internet. It use to be that this information would only be available under WHois.Net, the basic record keeper of who owns what domain name but now this information is available on many commercial sites online, such as whois.domaintools.com which are not affiliated with whois. The bottom line is your name, phone number, home address, email address and more may also as a result turn up all over the web on Internet Searches.
The easiest way to prevent your private information from being available all over the Internet if you own a Website or Blog, is through Private Domain Registration which unfortunately costs an average of about $10 a year for each domain name you register. Before you say well just give bogus information when you register, if there’s ever a dispute over the registration of your domain name, your bogus registration information may screw you 10 times till Sunday so you don’t want to do that.
You’re just best off paying the $10 or so and registering privately. What shows up when you register privately is just the name of the company you registered with and looks something like this using Godaddy private domain registration services for example:
Domain Name: YourDomainname.COM
Registrar: GODADDY.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Status: clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 01-jan-2010
Creation Date: 02-Oct-2005
Expiration Date: 10-Oct-2011
As you can see, no personal information is listed. One other thing to note is, when you register a domain name privately, you do not need to do something called business “Registration” which also includes Private Domain Registration and adds to your cost. It will cost you on the average around $14-$17 overall, to register a domain name and receive private domain registration but it probably is worth it in order to help protect your privacy.
