I just got Sunstroke (Heatstroke) the other day and thought I was going to die and in fact may have died if a friend didn’t call 911. I’m OK now but I thought I’d relate my Sunstoke experience so others could avoid getting it or know what to do in the future. When it happened to me, I thought I was having a brain aneurysm and was going to die immediately and perhaps I would have died if I didn’t get immediate treatment for dehydration. I’m also going to be more careful about everything in the future from now on because of my age- I’m in my early 50′s and my experience finally hit home that I’m not as young and invulnerable health wise as I think any more.

Here’s what happened to me. I’ve always ridden my electric scooter no matter what the temperature is as long as its under 8 miles round trip and never felt any bad effects other than perhaps sweating and maybe 15 minutes at worst of physical exhaustion. I actually only went 6 miles round trip to pick up something yesterday but the temperature turned out to be 104 I found out the next day. It really wasn’t bad going to my destination but on the way back home that’s when all the trouble started. I had gotten about 5 and a half miles and was only a few minutes away from home and when it hit me. My right hand that was on my electric scooter’s throttle and my hand started non-stop vibrating with electricity even when I took it off the throttle and my brain seemed to be totally incoherent and absence of normal things and I couldn’t think in in a kind order and I felt lightheaded,dizzy and about to pass out. Luckily enough I had stopped at a friends store which was nearby and asked to sit down and rest for 15 minutes as I thought I would be fine then. Well I wasn’t and I thought I was about to drop dead. My friend gave me some water to drink and luckily called 911 for me. 911 responded pretty fast,actually (the police) said not to drink anything and when the police came they took my vitals and everything which somehow okay but when they asked me what was wrong and if I took any prescription drugs, I started to tell them but my mind was blank and I literally could not remember anything or communicate in any kind of chronological articulate order in complete sentences and couldn’t say what was happening every time I tried. My mind was totally incoherent. I thought I was going to die and thought I was having a heart attack or stroke or aneurysm as I remember seeing on an old TV Show, “Trapper John”, Gregory Harrison’s young character, Gonzo Gates get a stroke. My friend who called 911 told me the next day that I had no color left in on ly face, I was completely white but he didn’t say anything to me at the time becaus ehe didn’t want to stress me more.

So the police drove me to the nearest hospital and I kept trying to explain what was happening but I couldn’t put 2 sentences together no matter how I tried. When I got to the Hospital and talked to the Nurses and the Doctors, the same thing happened. The worst thing is, I couldn’t remember the regular medicine I was on (that wasn’t related to my problem) or my family’s phone number, but lucky enough the Doctor who eventually treated me told me I was going to be fine and just was totally dehydrated from sunstroke and was sweating pretty bad in the air conditioned hospital. Before I go on, thank goodness I have decent Health Insurance as my bill would bankrupt me without it. If you don’t have health insurance, I recommend you get it as soon as possible no matter what it costs. My lips were totally parched. In fact as I remembered later, I had only 2 glasses of water before I got on my scooter and hadn’t worn a hat other than my bicycle helmet. I was totally out of it as I said and thought I was going to di3 any minute. The Doctor on the other hand calmed me down- as much as my consciousness was left to calm and proceeded for the next two hours or so to give me an IV for dehydration. Gradually, my brain, thinking process and memory started to come back and I could remember my sister’s phone number, the medication I was on, etc. and I was started to feel relieved and wasn’t scared I was going to die any more. I felt about 90% normal as opposed to 5% when I entered the hospital. My blood pressure and pulse when I was done with the IV apparently increased a huge amount from when I had entered the hospital apparently from the stress of what had happened to 171 and 111 Pulse (it usually is around 146/96 sorry I forgot the second number and around 61 pulse!). Luckily enough it was still acceptable enough to let me go home and continue to drink lot of fluid at home. I’m writing this as I woke up the next day, drinking lots of water but I’m feeling 100% fine now and no, I will never do this again in the future. I am totally grateful for the police, hospital and nurses and hope that reading this will prevent you from something like this from happening to you in the future or preparing you if something does.
