Indianapolis Colts Owe Fans A Refund for “Forfeit Game”

If the NFL and the Indianapolis Colts want to try to salvage any ounce of integrity they have left, the Indianapolis Colts should give their ticket holders a full refund for their “Forfeit Game” against the New York Jets which cost the Colts the chance at an undefeated season and the Colts and the NFL any credibility.

If a Pro Football player basically stopped going all out in a game near the end of the season because he didn’t want to risk an injury and stated this out loud, he’d be fined and suspended and be considered a pariah to his team. Wasn’t Randy Moss vilified with the Minnesota Vikings for not staying for the final moments of a playoff game. How are the Indianapolis Colts any different?

At least if the Indiana Colts had stated ahead of the game that Peyton Manning would leave by the third quarter no matter what the score, this fiasco would not have seemed as bad. As is, the Indianapolis Colts basically conceded/forfeited the game to the New York Jets. I don’t believe for a minute that the Indianapolis Colts players support the decision to have regulars leave the game despite their alleged support for Head Coach Jim Caldwell’s decision. Seriously, what are they suppose to say, “The decision was BS” and then get payback from the team later on?

In some ways Jim Caldwell’s decision which I’m sure had management’s full backing, reminds me of the then expansion 1970 San Diego Padres baseball Manager Preston Gomez pulling pitcher Clay Kirby for a pinch hitter in the 8th inning of a no hitter which the Padres were losing. Preston Gomez was playing to win the game and didn’t consider the effect that a no hitter by the starting pitcher would have on the team. Likewise, there is no way that pulling Peyton Manning as they did and giving the Colts their first loss is going to help morale. I could see the Colts rationalization of guarding against injury if they had never won an NFL Super Bowl. But the Colts have won the Super Bowl behind Peyton Manning and if somehow the unlikely prospect of Peyton Manning getting injured given his track record happened in trying to put together the greatest pro football record ever, so what its not the end of the world- the Colts have already won a Super Bowl. I’m going on record to say that psychologically the decision to concede the Jets game will affect the Indianapolis Colts morale and psyche and they will not win the Super Bowl and possibly lose in the playoffs as a redult. The Indianapolis Colts Owe their Fans an apology and their ticket holders a refund. The NFL should pass an official rule that teams are not allowed to pull their regular players when the outcome of a game is still at stake if they are not injured.
