All of us at one time or another have had internet speed problems, particularly when it seems that surfing on the web isn’t as fast as it once was. No it isn’t your imagination. Here are some easy ways to fix your internet speed problems even if you are a computer beginner and to once again surf the web at the speed that you’re used to. Measure Your Internet Speed First

I use a free Internet Speed Check Program called Test My Net and test my speed using Smart Test (the first entry). I recommend running the test 3 times in a row and recording your speed.

MSCONFIG

Nothing slows down your computer more than unneeded programs running in the background which in all likelihood also affects your internet speed. When people buy new computers unfortunately all the computers programs are running on Windows which slow down your computer immensely. Also for whatever reason, occasionally new programs are added to MSCONFIG and run in the background. One thing to be particularly aware about is when you install any new programs other than possibly letting the program add a shortcut on your desktop, don’t let it run at start up or quick start.

Getting back to MSCONFIG, click run, type MSCONFIG and then enter. MSCONFIG will then come up and click the Start Up column, the second column from the right. Everything with a click next to it is running in the background as soon as you boot your computer up. Chances are you only need a couple of things to run at Start Up like your Anti-virus Program. If you have more than a few things checked, I’d advise you to uncheck everything except the Anti-virus program or anything you want running when windows starts up, click OK and then click restart. When your computer starts I then recommend you use a registry cleaner program (Click here to read my blog post). Your computer should be running faster and probably your internet speed too.

Unplug Your Modem for a Minute

The problem could be with your modem so you want to reset it. Just pull out the power cord for a as well as the ethernet cable and after a minute put them back in. If the problem is with the modem it will be corrected right away unless the modem is broken.

Adware, Spyware, Viruses

Hopefully you don’t have these which may affect your internet speed. I suggest getting a very reliable software program called Spyware Doctor on Sale and initially run a detailed scan and later on running quick scans weekly. It is amazing the crap Spyware Doctor detects and removes that may slow your computer down.

Check on Your Power Cord

Don’t laugh- if you have a bunch of power adapters running in the same area, one can easily be sitting on top of your cord and slowing down the power!

More than One Firewall Running

You should not have more than one firewall running for your computer or else your internet speed may be affected. For instance if you have Windows Firewall running from your computer but your are getting your internet connection from a Router or a modem router which is also running a firewall your internet signal will be running through 2 firewalls. I recommend if that is the case you turn off Windows Firewall.

Some Browsers Run Faster than Others

Not all browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.) run at the exact same speed. If you have changed browsers that could be why your internet speed is faster. For myself, Firefox gets me the best speed but it may be different with you.

You Need More Memory (RAM)

If you don’t have much memory in your computer, things won’t run as fast. I recommend you have at least 4 GIGS of RAM or the maximum under your computer allows if under 4.

Norton Internet Security Slows Things Down

I’m not sure how true this is today but in the past Norton’s Internet Security and other Internet Security programs would slow down your surfing speed.

Well I hope this is helpful for you. I’d also recommend using an internet accelerator which increases the speed of your computer for dsl internet speed, cable internet speed and t1 internet speed.
