I think James Franco of “Spiderman” and “Freaks and Geeks” fame is a great actor but I’m sick of Hollywood Entertainment types getting away with telling what appear to be outrageous statements that would insult anyone’s intelligence and not get called on it. If I or anyone else made up some of these idiotic statements we’d be laughed at in our face. The other day, Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman of NBC Entertainment called the TV show Medium “an aging franchise, without a single fan letter, with no passion,” in regards to canceling the show because fans did not write to renew the show when everyone in fact thought NBC had already renewed it. Why would anyone trust these entertainment people? In the case of James Franco, he gave the following statement as to why he will not be able to deliver the UCLA commencement speech he was supposed to give June 12 to UCLA’s College of Letters and Science graduates, about a week before he was suppose to deliver it.

“I deeply regret not being able to keep my commitment to giving the commencement speech at UCLA’s graduation this year,” Franco stated in a statement to UCLA.” “Unfortunately, the date conflicts with me needing to be on location to begin pre-production on my next film. I wish everyone in the 2009 class the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.” I mean who writes this crap? I’m not saying he won’t be on location that day doing whatever pre-production does but honestly am I suppose to believe that 1. Either this pre-production day wasn’t known when he accepted UCLA’s offer to make the speech or that 2. He couldn’t be spared for a day to make the UCLA speech which everyone knew way in advance (Note he supposedly is to be in Ireland doing pre-production)? Okay I admit I know nothing about the movie industry but on the surface this all seems ridiculous. I’m guessing that because a bunch of students apparently were against James Franco making the graduation speech because he had just graduated from UCLA a few years earlier, Franco decided not to do it but instead of just being honest enough to just say that was the reason, I’m guessing he had one of “his people” draft up this ridiculous statement- at least its a ridiculous statement to me as an ignorant uninformed member of the public. Updated Note -06/08/09 While I don’t go to UCLA, I personally would have been happy have to have Franco as my speaker because in my mind he’s accomplished a lot in his young life as an actor and with his education (He has a BA from UCLA and is going to I think Columbia University for his Masters Degree) but for whatever reason these students don’t share that opinion.

Before I get hate comments from James Franco fans, I’m a fan of his too and will continue to see his movies. I just think his statement at face value seems ridiculous from the outside looking in. I’m sure he will be doing “Pre-Production” that day whatever that is, I just find it difficult to believe something couldn’t have been worked out to allow him to make the UCLA speech. That’s my honest opinion. The bottom line is, who gives a buck!
