Jazz Rock Gods (Jon Hiseman) Colosseum Morituri Te Salutant Majestic Box Set Review

I’ve been listening non-stop to one of the Best CD Box Sets I’ve gotten in years, Colosseum “Morituri Te Salutant” and its pure Majesty of Sound, a gift from Jazz Rock Gods. I’ve never been able to get into Jazz or Jazz Rock, but Colosseum is the exception. Colosseum are the Jazz Rock version of Cream- each member a virtuoso and each instrument incredible. “Morituri Te Salutant” offers incredible remastered sound to Colosseum’s great 1960/70’s studio recordings and a bunch of unreleased studio and live recordings as well as a great 10,000 word booklet with rare photos. My only criticism is that the live Side 3 isn’t quite as good as Colosseum Live, a 1971 live album that isn’t included here which I urge you to get and 2 tracks on Side 4, taken from a Bootleg live album, shouldn’t have been included because of the sub par audio quality compared to the other tracks. Colosseum is aptly named. Their music is Big and Majestic and sounds like if there was electricity back then, it would be played before the Ancient Gladiator Fights at the Roman Colosseum.
Colosseum which is still active today, consisted originally of Jon Hiseman on drums, James Litherland vocals and guitar, Tony Reeves Bass, Dave Greenslade organ and the late Dick Heckstall-Smith Saxophone. Later members were Dave “Clem” Clempson guitar/vocals, Chris Farlowe vocals and Mark Clarke bass. Each of their members are somehow featured on each of their recordings crystal clear without somehow running into the other instruments which is hard to believe but they pull it off. Jon Hiseman drum sound is the biggest drum sound I’ve ever heard yet somehow doesn’t overwhelm the other musicians. I’ve never heard a Saxophone sound as good and prominent as Dick Heckstall Smith in Colosseum and Dave Greenslade plays some of the tastiest organ I’ve ever heard. The Valentyne Suite is in my 10 Top All-Time Great Music Pieces of All-Time and Walking in the Park would probably be the Ancient Gladiator Fights equivalent of “We Will Rock You”- I mean that in a good way. Even if you’re not a Fan of Jazz or Jazz Rock, I’d urge everyone to get Colosseum Morituri Te Salutant Box Set.
