J.B. Hutto Video Tribute Blues Slide Guitar King R.I.P.

J.B. Hutto is one of my favorite Blues Guitarists of All-Time, the King of the Slide Guitar, and I’d like to turn anyone on who’s not familiar with J.B. Hutto with this J.B. Hutto Video Tribute of the great Man who sadly died to early at 58 of Cancer in 1983. If you like Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor and Homesick James, you’ll love J.B. Hutto. He made his guitar literally whistle and his vocals were unique. I’m surprised to find so relatively many videos online of J.B. Hutto playing live, albeit the video quality isn’t state of the art and while the audio sounds pretty good, it looks like its not completely synced to the Video but who the hell cares, this is a chance to see the great J.B.Hutto play live not Ashlee Simpson!
My favorite J.B. Hutto tracks are 20% Alcohol, Hip Shakin’, Too Much Alcohol, What Can You Get Outside That You Can’t Get at Home, I Feel So Good, Lula Belle’s Here and That’s the Truth. If you love J.B. Hutto, then you’ll be happy to know that J.B. Hutto’s great slide guitar legacy has continued for the last two decades with his nephew Ed Williams, leader of Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials, who taught Ed Williams the guitar. I recommend all of Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials Recordings and seeing them live if you have a chance as they put on a great show. One of my greatest regrets in life was that I didn’t really get into the blues until the late 1980′s by which time many of the great blues legends like J.B.Hutto, Hound Dog Taylor and Magic Sam had passed away and I never got to see them play live as a result.
To quote Blues Notes Magazine of November 2001, “In 1950, J.B. met Elmore James and quickly became entranced by James’ bottleneck style. He began to follow him whenever he could and studied his method of playing and singing. From the outset of teaching himself to play guitar, Hutto had always used an electric. But, after hearing James, his work would only consist of slide-playing thereafter.” J.B. Hutto’s band were known as the J.B. Hutto and the Hawks and when he moved to Boston in the late 1970′s his band was called J.B. Hutto and the New Hawks. J.B. Hutto recorded for Vanguard Records where J.B. Hutto is featured on Chicago the Blues Today, Delmark Records who released J.B. Hutto’s first full studio album, the classic Hawk Squat, Testament Records, Vanguard Records, Wolf Records and Varrick Records amongst others and since his death, several previously unreleased live recordings have been released.
And Carrying on J.B. Hutto’s Legacy, Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials
