I just saw “My Dinner With Jimi” which is available on DVD and had played to limited movie theaters in the past few years when it came out in 2003. “My Dinner With Jimi” features an incredible acting performance by Royale Watkins as Jimi Hendrix and is a really good movie that could have been so much better. Before I go on, the movie is mainly about the Turtles of “Happy Together Fame” and features Jimi Hendrix in the last 15-20 minutes or so of the movie, but if you’re a Jimi Hendrix fan, I’d still recommend you see this movie as Royale Watkins is Jimi Hendrix the same way Martin Landau was Bela Lugosi in “Ed Wood” and Royale Watkins deserved to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor but maybe no one knew the movie existed which is a shame. Royale Watkins looked like Jimi Hendrix not a caricature and made Jimi Hendrix a real human being not some drugged out Hippie cartoon.

The last 75 minutes or so of this movie were really good particularly the last half hour when the Turtles arrive in London 1967 and hang out with Graham Nash and Donovan and then meet Justin Hayward and John Lodge of the Moody Blues, the Beatles, Brian Jones and Jimi Hendrix (actually just Howard Kaylan of the Turtles does). I got to say though that the first 15 minutes were terrible, like a bad college film school class that was filmed I’m guessing by a video camera instead of regular film- sorry I don’t know the technical term but when you see the DVD you’ll know what I’m talking about. The biggest mistake of this movie and I’m guessing the one that stopped it from becoming a successful theatrical release is that instead of featuring 5.1 state of the art sound, the Turtles music sounds like its coming from a transistor radio in basic 2 channel stereo. The Dialogue Audio is fine but the soundtrack would have had a much more powerful impact if it was in 5.1 sound. If the intent was for the music to sound like it was coming from a transistor radio, it failed big time. Also some of the actors like the guy who plays Brian Jones look totally ridiculous and not like the people they are suppose to be but thank God Jimi Hendrix is Jimi Hendrix. I also thought the guy who played Jim Morrison of the Doors, Bret Roberts, was very good as he captured Morrison’s attitude.

“My Dinner With Jimi” has some hilarious scenes like when Mark Volman of the Turtles (the fat one with the glasses somehow played convincingly by Jason Boggs) and Howard Kayan (who incidentally wrote the movie) report to the draft board and when Mark Volman meets the Moody Blues. As I said the last half hour or so when the Turtles have a tense meeting with the Beatles and Howard Kaylan bonds with Jimi Hendrix is great.

I’d recommend this movie to any fans of Sixties music and Jimi Hendrix. I just wish it was available with 5.1 sound which would probably have had you buying some Turtles CDs. All the same “My Dinner With Jimi” is a good solid enjoyable movie.
