Joe Meek Telstar Movie Opens Yeah Baby Why No I Fought the Law Bobby Fuller Movie
Well the good news is I just found out that a new movie is coming out in England this week called “Telstar” all about the wild life and times of eccentric (that’s an understatement) English Record Producer Joe Meek and the incredible music he produced including of course “Telstar” by the Tornados, “Have I The Right” by the Honeycombs and so many others featuring some of the earliest work by Ritchie Blackmore, Mitch Mitchell, and so many other great musicians. The movie stars Con O’Neill as Joe Meek, an actor I admit I never heard of but he supposedly gives a great performance and also played Joe Meek when this originally was a play as well and has Kevin Spacey playing Meek’s Business Partner Major Wilfred Banks amongst other actors. I have no idea when this movie is coming to the United States and wasn’t aware of its release till today when I accidentally stumbled onto information about it online.
Here is a Trailer of the Movie (That’s a young “Ritchie Blackmore” on the right, I think)
To Some of You Who Are Unfamiliar With “Telstar” (You probably have heard it but never knew the title) here is the original version with Video of the actual Telstar from the United States Space Program.
It has taken over 45 years since Joe Meek’s death by suicide (he killed himself after killing his landlady in a fit of madness- told you he had a wild life) to make this movie but it has been made and I’m still waiting for someone to make “I Fought the Law” the Bobby Fuller Story, which probably has even more commercial possibilities, especially in the United States, than Telstar, because it has to do with a Texas boy who made good living the wild life with beautiful women in Hollywood in the 1960′s, making great music and then suddenly dying at a young age JFK style with cover ups galore. I can hardly wait for Telstar to open in the United States and if things bog down I’m guessing we can buy an import DVD of the Movie if it hasn’t opened in the United States by that time. Just hoping it will play on my DVD player.
