ATTN: Lost Creator JJ Abrams This Is Why Fringe Isn’t Working and Getting Bad Ratings

Update: Apparently Fringe’s ratings have since improved after I wrote the following. That’s Show Biz!
Later update: This show has since gotten really good and I’ve become a fan. What i wrote below is what I thought of the show early on and I stand by those remarks for that period of time but since then the show has gotten really good!

While I realize JJ Abrams the creator of “Lost” and “Fringe” isn’t likely to read this, agree or care, for posterity anyway I thought I’d blog why “Fringe”on the Fox TV Network isn’t working and as a result getting bad ratings. I’m not a fan boy or anything but it took me till the fourth episode, till it became obvious to me what is wrong with the show. I’m surprised JJ Abrams didn’t catch it right away, nothing personal.

Basically the problem with Fringe is there is no chemistry (positive or negative) with any of the characters with the very minor exceptions of the minor developing relationship of Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) and his father Walter Bishop (John Noble) and the extremely slightly developed relationship of Peter Bishop and Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv). Those are barely scrapping the surface. The other actors on the show do not seem to have any connection or bond that one can feel between themselves, the rest of the cast and the show. It’s as if they hired a bunch of actors on 1 day notice to do scene run-throughs when in fact they’re supposed to be shooting a well rehearsed finished episode. Right now, the characters Agent Astrid Farnsworth, Agent Charlie Francis and Agent Phillip Broyles are 3 Zombie Stiffs with no soul that none of the other characters or the audience care about one way or the other, they just are. They remind me of the 60′s characters who were doomed to die when they made their first appearance on the old Star Trek TV series and were killed within 5 minutes of touching down on a planet as the designated anonymous nondescript stiffs but in this show they still exist because they forgot to get lost forever! The point is you basically have a show revolving around 3 characters and the other 3 regular characters are anonymous fodder no one gives a damn about and could be replaced the next episode and no one would notice (this isn’t including Blair Brown or Mark Valley who seem to have been on the screen after episode 1, for a minute combined). This can either be attributed to bad casting, bad acting, bad directing or all three.

So I described the problem. Now what’s the solution? Well the easiest one is to get rid of all 3 of those characters, Ok possibly keep Astrid Farnsworth and give her something more to do, and give the remaining characters some kind of bond- say like in “Criminal Minds” or “CSI”. These characters have no collective mindset. Maybe add some characters that participate more on each show. Show me something JJ Abrams. All you got now is a show that looks like a run through demonstration for a potential TV pilot!
