Mitch Mustain Third String Quarterback of USC - I Don’t Get It
Mitch Mustain was one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the country during 2005-2006 at Springdale High School in Arkansas where he was High School National Player of the Year, became the starting quarterback at the University of Arkansas by the second game of the season as a true freshman and the team was 8-0 in the games he started when somehow he got benched. He chose Arkansas after his High School Coach, Gus Malzahn, was hired as Arkansas Offensive Coordinator. In January 15, 2006, Gus Malzahn, left Arkansas to coach at the University of Tulsa. One day later, Mustain requested to transfer as Arkansas was not going to be operating the offensive scheme he ‘d been promised. There were a bunch of controversies involving the Arkansas Head Coach and Mustain during this time which I don’t wish to get into on this blog. Let’s just say, I think Mustain made the right decision to transfer but where he transfered too was the worst decision he could make like other arrogant college quarterbacks have made in the past and will continue to make.
I’m assuming that Mitch Mustain is hoping for a pro career but instead of making a rational deliberate decision where he could go to a major college team where he was guaranteed a starting position, he put his eggs in one basket and transferred to one of the top football programs in the country where they already had a 2004 player of the year, Mark Sanchez. who waited almost 2 and a half years to see some serious game action and the only reason he got that was because the starter, John David Booty, who also waited 2 years before getting serious playing time, was injured. In the meantime, Aaron Corp another High School All-American Quarterback also signed on to USC. So the bottom line is for Mitch Mustain to get playing time, he’d have to compete with 2 other excellent quarterbacks, one of whom, Mark Sanchez had a lot longer time to master the offense in practice.
Well at this time, Mustain is the third string quarterback, Mark Sanchez has clearly established himself as the starting quarterback and Aaron Corp is the second string quarterback. However you admire Mustain for his competitive spirit and putting all his eggs in one basket, the problem with that is when it doesn’t work out you’re screwed. At present, Mustain is screwed and he can forget about any pro career at this time. If I was in Mustain’s position at the time, I would have taken the middle road, go to a team that still is a major team but not a powerhouse where I’d be guaranteed a starting position playing the offense I want and if I performed good, I’d get a shot at the pros. I know you’re probably saying that if someone wants to be a pro quarterback he’s going to have to think he’s the best and not be afraid of any competition. The reality is, and this was told to me at a health club by a great college basketball player who played a few years in the pros, how long you last in the pros comes down to landing with a team that makes use of your skills and ones that don’t. In this case, putting all your eggs on one basket may totally screw you up if its not the right basket.
On top of all this, to add insult to injury for Mitch Mustain, another Quarterback of the Year, Matt Barkley has committed to USC for 2009. Oy Vay, Mustain.
