NBC Southland One of Best Cop TV Shows Debuts – Southland Review
I just saw the debut episode of NBC “Southland” almost as an afterthought and I figured I’d turn it off after 10 minutes but the entire episode had me engrossed and it was one of the best cop TV Show debuts I’ve seen and I can’t totally figure out why which must be a great sign. The debut episode focused on the first day on the job by an LA Cop played by The O.C’.s Benjamin McKenzie in an a totally low key Martin Milner Adam 12 way for anyone who remembers that show and there really were no dead spots in the writing and the action which might be why I liked it.
The acting was really good and believable and Michael Cudlitz as Training Officer John Cooper gave an Emmy performance and for once the words of wisdom by the wise old cop seemed pretty realistic and pertinent and not generic. How can you not like a line telling a Rookie Cop that if you do what they told you in the Police Academy, you’ll get killed (or something like that)! The biggest surprise in the end was that it turned out that John Cooper was gay and this is the first time I’ve seen a TV show where a Gay person is just treated like anyone else and so far his sexual preference has nothing to do with the storyline. There’s at least one hot policewoman as well!
The pacing of Southland was first rate as its kind of like we’re being taken on a tour of Dante’s Inferno, only the hell is Los Angeles. One of the things I liked about Southland’s debut was that it was not preachy or an “After school Special” as what is, is, to use a variation of a Bill Clinton phrase, and there was really no back story to various sordid events which made them more realistic. Give this show a shot- pun intended.
