New York Giants 1965 NFL Worst Field Goal Kicking Team Ever (Repost)

Wow field goal kicking in the NFL sure has changed a lot in the last 40 years. Nowadays it seems if a kicker isn’t hitting 85% of his field goal attempts they’re history but not so in the NFL past. Take the case of the 1965 New York Giants. I had to read this from 4 different online sources to believe it. I’m guessing off the top of my head that the 1965 New York Giants had the NFL’s worst field goal record in the last 50 years and I can’t figure out how prey tell this was allowed to happen. The 1965 New York Giants went and I kid you not, 4 for 25 in field goals made, a 16% rate. That’s right, they made 4 filed goals in 25 attempts. I was a kid living in New York City then and somehow I wasn’t aware of this record for futility until I accidentally stumbled on this looking up some NFL kickers. I can’t imagine another NFL team doing worse on field goals in the last 50 years in the NFL - please let me know if there was a worse team.

You would figure that if the Giants kicking was that bad during the 1965 season, they would have replaced their kicker. But noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Here’s what happened as far as I can
reconstruct from researching online. The Giants has a field goal kicker named Andy Stynchula who was 3 for 7 for field goals. Stynchula also played Defensive Lineman. Early in an October 24 game against the Cleveland Browns, he twisted an ankle and could no longer kick. Prior to that, on October 3, 1965 for some reason, Bob Timberlake, a third round draft pick at quarterback from the University of Michigan who also kicked in College, kicked a 43 yard field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 23-13 win. This field goal was the last field goal the Giants made for the rest of the season! Timberlake took over as field goal kicker and was 0 for 15. That’s right, 0 for 15. Why the New York Giants Head Coach Allie Sherman didn’t replace Timberlake as field goal kicker is beyond comprehension. The good news is that Timberlake converted 21 of 22 extra points.

It just seems amazing that in a place like New York City, the Head Coach wasn’t run out of town for sticking with a field goal kicker who missed 15 straight field goal attempts. Just before the start of this current NFL Season, Jay Feeley was cut by the Miami Dolphins after hitting 21 of 23 field goals, a 91.3 percentage. I wonder what exactly was going through Head Coach Allie Sherman’s head by sticking with an 0 for 15 field goal kicker. What’s even more amazing is this feat of futility seems to have been lost in time like it never happened. Its like something out of the Twilight Zone. But then again, Sarah Palin could have become President.
