No More Jury Duty - Our Legal System Needs Professional Jurors

Let’s face it, most of us don’t want to do jury duty and when we do, many of us have negative attitudes which may effect case outcomes. In fact, a lot of people shouldn’t be allowed to be jurors in the first place as they don’t have the intelligence and ability to make logical common sense decisions without letting their emotions take over. I feel our legal system would be better served by having professional jurors. Specifically a Government Agency of full-time career jurors who’ve meet certain educational requirements and went through a thorough background and interview process and extended training. OK, you’d wind up with people not judged by a jury of peers representing all walks of life which include the dumb, stupid and unsuccessful, but people being judged by an elite intelligently trained group of people with an understanding of the law. Is that so bad?

I’ve recently watched a lot of “Dateline” and “48 Hours” on TV and I’ve been utterly astonished by how the members of different juries have convicted people of murder based upon the facts presented and their explanations thereafter. I’m not saying that their verdicts resulted in the innocent being convicted, just that the jury had no business making those verdicts based on the facts presented and their explanations for how they found the defendants guilty. Note my opinions are based on seeing condensed court cases as presented on TV slanted in such a way to give the viewer definite impressions.

Basically what I saw were jurors who have made up their mind on a case before the case was fully presented, people basing decisions just because they didn’t like the defendants manner and jurors making decisions without understanding the basis and intent of the law, which simply would not be the case of a professional jury.

Where would the money come from for a professional jury? Well I think most tax payers wouldn’t object to paying a percent of their taxes funding professional jurors if it freed them from jury duty and we’d actually be boosting the economy by creating thousands of new jobs. Jobs would be filled by law school graduates and paralegals, people well versed in the legal system who would become career jurors. These jurors would have supervisors who in turn would have supervisors and function as a Government Agency with rules and regulations, oversight and checks and balances.
