One Tree Hill and Pro Basketball The Most Idiotic Unrealistic TV Sports Storyline
I actually liked One Tree Hill the first couple of couple of years on TV as it kind of kept it real and it used basketball like Friday Night Lights on NBC uses football but not quite as good. Over the last few years the show to me has become “Melrose Place on Crack” and I feel ashamed of watching it but somehow I still do. I did give up on the show 2 years ago but out of curiosity I started watching the show again when they decided to place everything five years in the future I still don’t quite get if that means they are now in 2013 and we should see future technology but I’m willing to not care about that. Of all the insane things they’ve done though and the most unrealistic is the storyline about Nathan’s Scott’s comeback attempt to play in the NBA.
Nathan Scott was destined to be a first round NBA draft pick when just before the draft he gets into a bar fight and is injured so badly he won’t be able to play basketball in the pros and isn’t drafted. Well this season Nathan decides that through his own training he’s overcome his injuries and is ready to play pro basketball and just wants a chance to prove himself. None of the NBA teams though want to give him a chance because they would be liable if he permanently injured himself as a result of what happened to him the year before. Or at least that’s my interpretation. Finally one day, an NBA Developmental League team gives him a call and he sees them in person but instead of getting a chance to play, he’s offered a Head Coaching Position. Instead of being grateful for getting a chance to be involved with Pro Basketball again, its a foot in the door, he stupidly turns it down because he still wants to be a player. Forget the fact that he’ll never get the opportunity again to start off as a Head Coach associated with the NBA, he can’t accept that the doors for him as a player have been shut down.
Now here’s where the storyline gets totally ridiculous, idiotic and insulting to the intelligence of every viewer whose IQ is over 2020: Nathan Scott decides to make a comeback to try to get him into the NBA by playing Slamball, a sport which is essentially Basketball with Trampolines and somewhat physically dangerous, especially with someone with his history. Thinking Slamball is going to impress the pros to giving him a chance is utterly retarded. Slamball can not be equated to basketball on any real level and in real life the pros would think he was on crack. In real life, the thing someone would do in Nathan Scott’s situation if he wanted a chance to play again with the pros is hire an agent and sign with some pro European Team and try to establish himself as a player again there. The pros scout Euro basketball all the time and if Nathan played good the pros would know it and he’d get a free agent chance to try to make an NBA Roster or at least a Developmental League Roster. What the NBA does not do is scout Slamball games. In fact they wouldn’t take anyone seriously playing Slamball. Whoever writes this stuff needs some serious help and I need help for watching this show which except for Dan Scott, my favorite TV A Hole, there is no reason to.
