If there was any Justice in the world, “Worlds Greatest Dad” starring Robin Williams would be nominated for an Oscar for Best Movie, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Director, etc. Unfortunately as we all know, there really is no Justice in the World, and “Worlds Greatest Dad”, a true Dark Comedy Masterpiece, will not receive the recognition it deserves. I’m honestly surprised that Worlds Greatest Dad was made in the first place as its clearly not a movie that works seeing it in a movie theater but meant to be watched as a DVD as it’s a bit too slow and cringe worthy to watch in a movie theater but “works” fine watching it at home. Worlds Greatest Dad was obviously too smart for its movie audience which didn’t get the joke. Honestly the general public does not want to hear how stupid they are and easily they can be manipulated.
If you love subtle Dark Comedy and enjoy reading this Blog, you’ll love watching “Worlds Greatest Dad”. It’s kind of a nastier, less sexy, Mike Judge “Office Space”. Robin Williams plays Lance Clayton, a nice, floundering single father whose son Kyle (Daryl Sabara), has to be one of the most obnoxious, assholes in the history of the movies. What makes Worlds Greatest Dad work is that Kyle is not interesting at all, has no hidden talents, is not entertaining as a person, and one isn’t drawn into him at all and we feel sorry for Robin Williams putting up with his crap. The first part of the movie deals with the father and son relationship and the second part of the movie, the true dark comedy masterpiece, deals with what happens when Kyle accidentally dies doing David Carradine/Michael Hutchence INXS auto errotic masturbation and Robin Williams covers this up as a suicide and one thing leads to another where eventually Dumb Asshole Kyle is now worshiped as a Misguided Genius. I’m actually not spoiling this movie by telling you this as the movie is more about the path as to how this all happens.
Worlds Greatest Dad would be the perfect movie to play in High School Class to make good points and discussion but unfortunately most of todays youth probably wouldn’t get it and be resentful. Worlds Greatest Dad is kind of the funniest movie you’ll ever see without laughing out loud if that makes any sense.
