The American Way Mad Men Meets Heroes Meets OJ Simpson Capricorn One
I’m surprised that neither HBO or Showtime grabbed the rights to “The American Way” a Superhero Graphic Novel by John Ridley published by Wildstorm, when it first came out, as a TV series based on the book would have been a grand slam. The concept of The American Way is brilliant: the United States has created a bunch of Superheros who fight staged battles with “Super Villains” also created by the US Government all for the purpose of American propaganda as the public think everything is legit. The program is run by Madison Avenue types. Everything runs fairly smoothly until a Black Superhero is introduced. The Pitch: “Mad Men” meets “Heroes” meets OJ Simpson’s “Capricorn One” meets Pro Wrestling!
This graphic novel is a good read but could have been much better. It is incredibly strong in the beginning and the middle but the last third or so of the book kind of drags and gets repetitive as it deals with how the newly introduced Black Super Hero, called The New American, who originally hides his racial identity inside a costume with a Helmet and visor, is hated by some racist super heroes as well as the racist public. Having lived during the 60′s when this takes place I can honestly say that the United States wasn’t as racist and as full of hatred as this books portrays.
This graphic novel would have been a masterpiece and a basis for a continuing series if it spent more time on the concept of Super Heroes being as Pro wrestling instead of using a third or so of the book about the Black Super Heroes troubles and hatred he faces which we get the gist after 10 pages, we don’t need to read 50 pages! The book is still a good read and I wouldn’t be surprised if and when “Watchmen” becomes a hit movie, “The American Way” becomes a TV series.
