The Best Peter Lorre Films Not on DVD
One of the injustices of life is that many of the films of Peter Lorre are not available commercially on TV, depriving a following of Peter Lorre’s fans the pleasure of seeing the master at work as well as depriving people who weren’t aware of Peter Lorre, the pleasure of discovering him. Here are some of the Best Peter Lorre films (with year of release) that I managed to track down that haven’t been released on DVD but should. I’m frankly surprised that a Peter Lorre collection of these films has not been released on DVD.
Crackpot (1936)
This is my favorite showcase of Peter Lorre playing Peter Lorre. He actually plays Colonel Gimpy, a total nutcase, who secretly heads a spy organization trying to get the plans for a new airplane.
Island of Doomed Men (1940)
This movie is Peter Lorre at his most sadistic playing Stephen Danel, a sadist who owns a penal island, and when he is not humiliating and mistreating his wife, is torturing his convict prisoners and using them for slave labor.
The Face Behind the Mark (1941)
This awesome movie demonstrates the full acting range of Peter Lorre. Lorre plays Janos Szaby a kind, innocent immigrant to America who just as he arrives is caught in a fire and his face is horribly burned and disfigured. A skilled craftsman, his hideous features make it impossible for him to get work and he is forced to turn to crime to live. He becomes a successful criminal and makes enough money to buy a very lifelike mask to hide his scars behind. He hates what he does but wavers in getting out.
I was an Adventuress (1940)
Honestly this movie was a bit of a disappointment to me and the only reason I am listing it here is that it is the first and only time Peter Lorre was in a movie with Eric Von Stoheim, also one of of my favorite actors/directors. They play a pair of crooks on a caper. This is actually a light romantic comedy and not a must Lorre film by any means.
