The Dunwich Horror (1970) The Best H.P. Lovecraft Movie After Re-Animator
If you love H.P. Lovecraft or Horror Movies and can rent DVDS by mail, you should definitely rent the Dunwich Horror, a 1970 movie starring Dean Stockwell and Sandra Dee adapted from a short story by the legendary H.P. Lovecraft. I have seen many of H.P. Lovecraft’s works made into movies and TV episodes and this is the best one I’ve seen after the legendary, Re-Animator. The movie was written by Curtis Hanson who directed L.A. Confidential and is one of his earliest works.
What makes the Dunwich Horror so great is the great casting and the thoroughly primitive special effects of 1970. If this movie had 2008 Special Effects or better Effects than it did back in 1970, I think the movie would actually lose its gritty effectiveness. The Special Effects are so bad in this movie, they actually make the movie seem more realistic if that makes any sense!
The casting of the actors is perfect as are the actors. Dean Stockwell looks and is so believable in his part as Wilbur Whateley who tries to bring the Old Ones back to life, that its like he is Wilbur Whately and not playing a character. Sandra Dee is incredibly effective as the Virgin who Wilbur Whately uses to bring the Old Ones Back. Edd Begley and Sam Jaffe are also terrific and Talia Shire is featured as a Nurse.
The movie goes something like this:
Nancy Baxter (Sandra Dee), a virginal blonde student at Miskatonic University meets Wilbur Whateley (Dean Stockwell), the grandson of a warlock who was lynched years earlier and the illegitimate son of a woman who’s been in an insane asylum since giving birth to Wilbur.
Wilbur shows interest in the Necronomicon and in Nancy, because he needs both to open a gateway for demons called “The Old Ones” to enter our world. He invites her back to his secluded home in Dunwich, where drugs her, plots to sacrifice her on a seaside altar and fights with his insane grandfather (Sam Jaffe). His brother, is a multi-headed flying monster that sees things in negative is kept locked in the attic, but escapes and then starts making chop chop with everyone in the town. You’ll have to see the rest for yourself.
What makes this movie so effective and believable is its simplicity and lack of decent special effects. I think if this movie was redone today it wouldn’t work because it would be a soulless, special effects movie. I also think Dean Stockwell looks totally real in this movie but if you had another actor with his perm and mustache, you’d probably be laughing non-stock but it works for Dean. If you love H.P. Lovecraft or like good creepy horror movies, I totally recommend The Dunwich Horror.
