The Seattle Seahawks of 70′s and Boise State Should Be Emulated by NFL Teams to Play Go For It Football
One thing I don’t understand about some NFL teams today is why after say their first 4-6 games they don’t realize that they are mediocre at best and by using the same plays with the same personnel they are just due to drone the season out producing terrible to mediocre results? In the 1970′s, the Seattle Seahawks under Head Coach Jack Patera, Offensive Coordinator Jerry Rhome and Quarterback Jim Zorn (now Washington Redskins coach) said “Screw This” and as far as I remember were the only NFL team ever to play Go For It Football.
Basically the way “Go For It Football” went was the Seahawks basically felt they were not going to win many football games by not taking chances so as far as I remember they’d go for it regularly on 4th down situations on the 50 or beyond needing 1-4 yards for a first down, they’d use trick plays, they’d go for touchdowns instead of field goals, etc. They’d also fake punt, fake field goal and use all sort of trick football plays like that of Boise State against Oklahoma. Some worked, some didn’t but the bottom line is they were competitive in games they normally wouldn’t stand a chance.
So why won’t NFL teams do things like rotating 2-3 different quarterbacks to run 2-3 different type offenses in a game to confuse the defense, use Boise State type trick plays one after another, go for it on 4th and 4 etc. if they have no chance on beating the other team playing traditionally? The only thing I can think of is, they don’t want to stand out from the rest of the league and would rather lose by traditional methods then win an occasional game by unorthodox methods. Sad.
