USC Rey Maualuga “Grinding” Erin Andrews Cost Him NFL Draft Millions?
USC linebacker Rey Maualuga the 2008 Bednarik Award for college football’s top defender, was suppose to be drafted in the first round in the 2009 NFL Draft along with fellow USC linebackers Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews to become the first linebacker trio to be picked in the first round. Instead, against all apparent sense and reasoning (Oakland Raiders AL Davis doesn’t count- he’s the Phil Spector of NFL owners) Rey Maualuga dropped from an obvious first round pick to the 38th pick of the NFL draft in the second round. A lot of NFL teams are like women who look for excuses why they shouldn’t go out with someone rather than why they should and NFL teams will look for any excuse. Such apparently was the reason Rey Maualuga became a second round pick instead of a first round pick, costing him millions. The only thing I can think of offhand from the outside looking in is because Rey Maualuga was stupid enough to “grind on” ESPN Hottie Erin Andrews. Check this out.
That might have left a lasting impression on some NFL people who are concerned about image and a reminder about Maualuga’s arrest for misdemeanor battery in 2005. Whether he was judged by a stricter standard by NFL people because he isn’t Caucasian I don’t know. He’ll still make plenty of money but if I were an NFL prospect I’d recommend to keep a low profile off the field and shut up and smile. Maybe Rey Maualuga dropped to the second round for other reasons not relating to this but until someone says why, we’ll never really know.
