Veronica Mars Gets Cancelled and Beverley Hills 90210 Gets Remade: Why Do TV and the Movies Remake TV Shows That Were Cancelled Because of Low Ratings?
I just read a rumor that the CW which recently remade/recycled Beverly Hills 90210 is thinking of doing the same to one of my favorite shows Melrose Place. This follows a trend of movies being adapted from old TV Shows like Get Smart, Starsky and Hutch, Bewitched, ad nausuem. The question is why considering almost all of these shows were on their last legs when they were cancelled either because of the ratings, creativity or both.
As far as I know and I may be wrong about this, most of the TV and movie remakes of previous TV Shows have been commercial failures more than successes. The obvious exceptions are the Star Trek movie franchise and Mission Impossible (I don’t really consider Batman a remake per se of the TV series). Even in regards to the Star Trek and Mission Impossible movies, they are basically completely new stories that would have worked by themselves if there was no TV series in the first place. The Star Trek TV series franchise are spinoffs not remakes of the original series.
What I don’t get is why the people who approve these remake movies think that people want to see their favorite actors play the roles of TV characters from the 50′s,60′s,70′s and 80′s, when in alot of cases their fans had never watched the original shows or the people who watched the original shows are not particular fans of the “hip” current actors who are going to play the roles of the original actors. I don’t exactly think Bewitched or Get Smart was a Blockbuster. In fact I think one of the only movies I like made from a TV Show was the First Brady Bunch Movie which kind of offered a hilarious view on the concept.
As far as recycling TV series into new TV series with different casts, etc., what exactly is the point as the original series was obviously canceled for a purpose. The world today is not so different from the last episodes of the original Beverley Hills 90210 and Melrose Place so creatively I can’t see someone bringing new life to a cancelled series. Chances are the original audience for these shows won’t be that interested and as to a new younger audience, what exactly is the attraction when you might be able to get them more interested in a new original TV show or keep and develop a show that was critically successful and try to build higher ratings for it. Specifically, the CW would rather cancel a great show like Veronica Mars to recycle Beverley Hills 90210 and possibly Melrose Place. I can just see it now, 5 years after “One Tree Hill” is cancelled, we have the new “One Tree Hill”. GARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
