Why Don’t Pro or College Football Teams Try These Plays?
One thing I don’t understand about pro and college football is why teams don’t seem to try the following plays listed below. If some teams have, please let me know and I’ll revise this Post as applicable.
Punting – The Punter lines up 20 -25 yards or more behind the line of scrimmage rather than 15 yards. As far as I know the punter can line up anywhere behind the line of scrimmage and if a team is on say the 35 yard line and wants a short punt to pin the opponent inside the 10, rather than risk a touchback on a bad “Pouch Punt”, the punter kicks normally but because he’s punting farer back he can kick normally, not fear the rush as much and he doesn’t have to pouch punt it. Of course this is assuming the center can hike it that far.
Punting – Alternate Punt to the 20-25 yard behind the line of scrimmage punt described above with the quarterback lined up as punter – This is assuming the quarterback can kick the ball. This is exactly as above except under this play the quarterback has the option to pass the ball as well as kick it.
End Around 2 to 3 plays in a row – The end around is usually a great surprise play that’s good for a bunch of yards when used in the right situation. I have never seen this play used two or three times in a row though and catching the defense asleep a second or third time. I’d try it mixing both the right and left sides.
Bombs Away Two Superfast Receiver Squad Rotations – You’d need 4 really fast wide receivers to work this in the first place and yes teams have used their fastest receivers in the same formation before. What I would try is have 2 superfast groups of receivers with a quarterback with a deep arm and start the game in a quick huddle bombs away offense shuttling each group in at every play with the plays already planned in advance. You can also use this at different moments of the game as well. If for nothing else, the defensive secondary will be tired out running a track meet. I’m guessing this probably has been done numerous times.
Pros Only Passing and Running Quarterback Rotations – This is something I would try in the pros as colleges already do this, when you know that there is no way you’re team has a shot at beating your opponent playing your regular “game”. Quite simply, I’d alternate depending on the situation, an offense with a “Passing” quarterback and one with a “Running” quarterback. If there isn’t a “Running” Quarterback, then this is moot. By using different plays and formations with 2 different squads of players – some players will be in both rotations, you’ll probably get the defense out of sync which will eat up time and get you a few scores. Of course you could still lose this way and if you’d rather lose playing straight up then by playing gimmicks then this serves no purpose.
