Why the New York Jets Won’t Hire Mike Shanahan as Head Coach
I was shocked that the Denver Broncos fired Head Coach Mike Shanahan who led them to 2 Super Bowl Victories and a 138-86 Record over 14 years, the second long Head Coaching tenure amongst active coaches. It’s a what have you done for me lately firing. I’m positive that New York Jets fans are drooling over the possibility that the Jets make Mike Shanahan the New York Jets Head Coach which would be a great move but it will never happen. The reason it won’t happen is PR, specifically a Media Bashing.
In short how will it look if the New Yorks fired Eric Mangini because the team collapsed in the last 5 weeks of the season and missed the playoffs and replaced him with a Head Coach whose team collapsed the last 3 weeks of the season and missed the playoffs? The New York Press would never buy it and the New York Jets would take a major bite to their public image. In the long run, Mike Shanahan would be just what the Jets needed but I doubt that the Jets would be willing to put up with the short term backlash from the media. Who decided to trade for Bret Favre anyway?
