Your Internet Speed Will Slow Down if You Use Both a Router and Windows Firewall for your Laptop
If your wireless laptop internet speed is not as fast as your like, here’s what could be the root of your problem that no one ever alerted you to: The combination of running Windows Firewall and your Wireless Router means you are going through 2 Firewalls for everything you click on the internet which slows speed down considerably. I was never aware of this till someone at the Wireless Department for my Cable Broadband Service told me this 5 years after I started wireless service with them. You’d think they would have let me know about this when I started my service with them. To anyone reading this post, what I’m writing here is strictly my opinion and feel free to disregard.
I ran various Broadband Speed Tests using TestMy.Net, using their Smar Test to see if there really was a speed difference and sure enough I detected much faster speed when I had Windows Firewall Turned Off and the router on.
What about Security though? Well basically your router is your Firewall and just to test things out I ran Shields Up a great Security Tester on the Gibson Research Corporation website, specifically at GRC Shields UP. I personally just use the tests to make sure all my Ports are Stealthed. I do not pay attention to failed comments attributed solely to Your Computer’s reply to their Ping if everything shows up as Stealthed if they originally show up when you run both Windows Firewall and a Router at the same time. This is my personal opinion and GRC will disagree. However, if somehow the Shields Up Tests with your computer with Windows Firewall and a Router running together say Passed and everything is Stealthed and “Fail” with the Firewall turned off, then I definitely would not turn off Windows Firewall, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. The bottom line is, if your Shields Up Tests show the exact results with everything stealthed, with the firewall off with the Router running and the Firewall On with the Router running, I would turn off the Windows Firewall so that my internet speed is faster. The bottom line is its up to you to do what’s best for you.
